5 Centimeters Per Second
|
![]() I just watched it for the first time thanks to CR's Global Shinkai Day 2013 and I guess I just wanted to talk about it...someone hold me please, I can't control these tears. OK, I might be exaggerating a bit with my reaction but this movie did leave me with a pretty heavy feeling. After having so far watched The Place Promised In Our Early Days, Voices of a Distant Star, and now this, I can say that 5 Centimeters is the best of that bunch (yes I know the first two were his earlier works, I'm also going to watch Children Who Chase Lost Voices soon). Anyway, the music, the animation and set pieces, the dialogue, the characters, it all just came together so well in my opinion. This might just be me but I get the feeling that 5 Centimeters is also just an altered yet more fleshed out Voices of a Distant Star. Some other things I just want to quickly say: That ending song sequence, all I can say is wow...well done. And Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide I really felt for Sumida, the second act that she was in just made really me sad So what did every one else think of the movie? |

Realistic. The most mature of his works by far.

Enjoyment, I don't care about deeper meaning but sometimes some animes have both and that's always a nice surprise.
What I mean by that is I didn't enjoy 5cm per second in the slightest bit whether or not it has a "deeper" meaning. Other than it's visuals and maybe score it was a waste of time to watch for me. |

it's definitely on my watch list, along with voices on a distant star and I guess children who chase lost voices now. I saw a place promised in our early days quite some time ago, but I remember loving it.

So what you're saying is that 5 Centimeters Per Second wasn't you cup of tea and that having enjoyment and a deeper meaning in a story is a nice surprise? |

I say watch Voices first and then 5 Centimeters whenever you can but that's just me It just seems like a story evolution and expansion from one to the next |

I watched this back in the day like 08 09 when I was doing the "romance" phase of my anime career, and I was really sad to be hit with the realization that real life can be like this. Childhood friends and true love doesn't always come true.
I was like 17, 18 this one hit me pretty hard back then, that's why I have never re-watched this anime, cause the whole story has such a big impact. |

It's the way you worded it is all, meant nothing by it. |

I love all the movies by Makoto Shinkai, until today I watched "Voices of a distant star", "Place promised in our early days", and "5 centimeters per second". I got to say I love all of them but "5 Centimeters per second" is definitely my favorite. Well Until I watched "Children who chase lost voices" today, that totally is now my favorite. But All of the movies is great and of course beautiful. The Music, storyline, and art is truly beautiful. But all of them is sad >..< But I love them all nonetheless ^ - ^

I saw it awhile ago and enjoyed it although it's not my favorite Makoto film that I've watched yet. I hope the upcoming Garden of Words this year will be good.

I loved Voices of a Distant Star, Place Promised in our Early Days and 5 Centimeters Per Second. All were in a similar theme, love separated by space and time.
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide I felt that Voices actually kept the theme the best as it seems they would never meet again and she just kept getting further and further away, thus it was the most tragic. In Place Promised she was OK in the end so it was the happier of the three though it was sad in the middle when she disappeared, having gotten trapped in relation to the tower. In some ways 5 Centimeters was the most tragic as it didn't have to end that way, there was no scientific reason why they couldn't be together. He either could have gotten together with Sumida who would have loved him deeply or he could have told Akari to wait for him or he could even have run away with her and stayed in Tokyo in the first place, living in a cardboard box or tube hotel if necessary; so in some ways it was the saddest of the three as the unrequited love was avoidable. I agree it did sort of feel like Voices without the spaceships to really keep them apart with the light jumps. You can say those romances aren't deep but they were very well done and I was moved deeply by them anyways. The simplicity allows the emotions to come through clearly. Children Who Chase Lost Voices, just seeing it today, was the most recent so visually it was the best but it didn't have nearly the emotional impact for me. The ending didn't really work for me. Surprisingly it is my least favorite of the four. It felt like it was trying to be more of a broad mass appeal movie and yet it was too scary for me to show my kids I thought and yet missed being really an adult romance story like the others at the same time. Still good just missing something for me and the story kind of fell apart at the end. Ah well... |

finished voices on a distant star, re-watching place promised in our early days right now. these things just beg for an update, I think. voices on a distant star, while being great, the animation is so dated and could be done a lot better. it also felt too short. places promised in our early days though, I think they could just remaster it and it'd be fit for an HD release. even by today's standards, it's visually stunning even in 480P.

5cm was by far my favorite of the bunch. I normally don't dwell on the past very much but at the stage I'm at in my life it hit home very hard and brought a lot of regret to the surface.
Probably the most personal movie I've ever watched. I'm glad you started the topic, I wanted to talk about it too |
