http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/transgender-girl-s-parents-sue-for-her-right-to-use-the-bathroom-201415013.htm

I just saw this article, and it left me very conflicted. I have nothing against gays, or any sexuality. I don't mind transgenders ( though I don't believe you can just wake up one day and decide you're the wrong gender ), but Just imagine. A person who does has a penis shares the bathroom with you. It could be anyone, and they can claim they're transgender. Would you feel comfortable? I think the opposite would go for guys, though I'm not sure how you'll reply..

Please share your opinions.

The kid in the article is 6 years old!!! Allowing this kid into the girl's bathroom is wrong. What about the other kids who are being adversely affected by having this issue raised while they are all still so young. The message they get is that their feelings are meaningless and that only the feelings of the transgender kid are important. Political Correctness is causing America to completely loose its way.

I think if the person is actually taking the necessary steps to be the other gender, surgery and hormone therapy etc, then I wouldn't find it to be a big deal. If it is just some person claiming it and they aren't doing anything to actually be transgendered I would find it creepy and assume they are just a pervert. Even if it is an issue of not being able to afford it yet I think they should just stick to the bathroom that their current gender would typically use until they can begin the process.

If they were to get surgery, they'd be transsexual not transgender.. If you're going to label people, at least try and do it correctly.

We are obsessed with labels, categorizing people and highlighting differences is as American as apple pie. We never focus on what we have in common like our common values and beliefs. We are who we are. Labels don't define us.

Funny you say that and yet you let gender categories define who can use what bathroom...

That's not what my first posting was about at all, my concern is with the impact of all this on the other kids.

The only reason there will be any impact to begin with is because children are categorized from birth. Blue is for boys and pink is for girls... Boys play with robots and girls get dolls. Boys are dirty and girls have cooties... So tell me, if they didn't have to care about what category they fell under, you think they'd mind who shares their bathroom?

I wouldn't be concerned, but I think this boy/girl will need a special bathroom. Don't they have toilets for the disabled over there?

I'm not sure, but I think all bathrooms for the public are supposed to be accessible to the disabled.

Being transsexual or transgender isn't defined by whether or not you have a sex change surgery.

Actually it is. Gender and sex are two different things. Sex is physical and has to do with anatomy as opposed to gender which is purely socially constructed. Therefore, people who are transgender do not feel the need to change their physical appearance whereas transsexuals see their problems as purely physical.

Then again, they are both just labels whose definitions rely purely on who's doing the labeling.

Yes yes the whole not all trangendered people are transexual thing. So I said it incorrectly. Big deal. My point was, which you seemed to miss by focusing too much on incorrect wording being used, was that if, for example, a guy wanted to use the female bathroom then he should be a female via surgery and hormone therapy first. It is just my opinion obviously, which you are free to disagree with, but that is how it is.

Actually forgot that they would still be free to use the other bathroom without surgery but I would find it more odd and sketchy. I just don't trust people anyway though.
