Seeing as people in Japan consider anything that is animation to be anime, yes. They do not consider the word anime to mean just things made in Japan. So yes Avatar is an anime. Just like Shrek and all other shows and movies that are made using animation.

It's not about five high school girls in miniskirts in a slice-of-life setting, therefore it cannot be anime.

That was a joke.

Some people are seriously overthinking this, and some people are seriously underthinking it. No, The Last Airbender is not anime. I get the feeling some people want it to be anime so they feel okay about watching it - because they think anime is MATURE but cartoons are for babies or something.

I don't consider avatar anime...

lol i couldnt help my self

I wouldn't call it a cartoon, so it has to be anime. Who made the rule that anime only comes from Japan??? I say if you have a talent for it, you can make anime anywhere.

Yes, I do consider it anime. Mainly because it functions the same way as features which come out of Japan, and has lots of their stylized elements. I know it's not the technical definition, but the practical one is what I use. It also doesn't really matter to be honest; a good show is a good show, no matter where it comes from. =)

Are labels really necessary? If its a good show watch it if it sucks don't.

And here from an online Dictionary:
Origin of ANIME
Japanese, animation, short for animēshiyon, from English

Technically, no. But in spirit, YES!

It has so many things that a good anime has:

--Good music

--Signature anime artstyle

--...ACTION!

-- Comedy

"Anime" is considered a style of animation, not animation as a whole. To generalize anything to its simplest form isn't the best way to get your point across.

Last Airbender is inspired by Japanese Animation, but it is not a Japanese developed product. It's true that the word "anime" is short for animation, but for animation created in Japan. I have an Associate's Degree in 3D Animation and Design, does that mean my CG animated shorts are anime? No it most certainly does not.

Just because it's animated you can't that is anime. It is ANIMATION and not ANIME. In English, the term (anime) is defined as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastic themes. The intended meaning of the term sometimes varies depending on the context. If you compare typical Japanese anime with avatar you can find many differences.
So I say NO!

However it's funny to watch, story is also an interesting one.

Ok, for those who say that it's not anime cause it's "made in 'Merica", then is the only difference from a cartoon and anime is the origin?
For example, "The Boondocks" is American produced but the animation is made by Madhouse. Aaron McGruder stated that he loves anime and one of his favorites was Cowboy Bebop, which is why Huey has an afro and can kick ass, mimicking Spike. and even one of the fight scenes is damn near identical to a fight in CB.

Segments of the second season were animated by madhouse, but not the entire thing.

A lot of people are looking at this in a very heated, passionate, and critical way. The word anime itself is literally a Japanese abbreviation of the English word animation, so to a native Japanese person (which, by the way, i seriously wish i was) it should mean that any type of animation in any form is technically anime, im not Japanese nor do i have any serious connections to Japan so Japanese people may feel completely different about this. So if you look at it that way Avatar is definitely an anime, but personally when i think of anime i think of Japanese produced animation, so i would say Avatar isnt an anime...but on the flip side, i dont want to lump it with all the rest of the garbage that is American cartoons (and by that i am referring to most of the cartoons produced since 2007) so i would say Avatar and Korra are kinda like American Animes from their themes, animation, etc.
