Yes, those traits are quite pretentious/elitist. I don't tend to analyze music or pretend that it illustrates a lack of critical thought ability in others. Music is a matter of taste, and as such, it is completely arbitrary and subjective. Really, it speaks more about your tastes in that you believe it is necessary to be critical of music/art/entertainment.

For you to validate yourself through your superior tastes in something arbitrary speaks more to your lack of self-confidence and hollow ego. People who are confident and secure with themselves are far less likely to be judgmental about others. People who lack fulfillment in their lives attempt to prop their egos up on some other sort of fulfillment such as demeaning others a manner of bolstering their own self-image.

Or do you truly believe you are one of a small elite group of people who "actually think" about things and are "much deeper and intellectual" than everyone else.

In summary, relax, focus on being content with yourself, and don't worry about other people too much. You'll be happier.

Hmm... I think you misinterpreted some of my post, but I do agree that people need to stop projecting their likes/dislikes onto others

I guess 'hate' was too strong of a word to use. I meant to imply that people in general dislike thinking too deeply about their entertainment so why do people hate them or the media for it?

ah, thats much better...my assumption is people like to watch or listen to anything the media might dub "cool" without thinking too deeply into the actual meaning and just "going with the flow"...but i dont want to get off topic...so yeah.

It is natural to infer you believe it is important to understand how thoughtful or thoughtless someone is regarding their tastes. My point was the topic is moot since it should be irrelevant what other people's tastes are.

I've wondered for years why people like some of the things they do and all I can say is people like what they like ain't nothing to be done or said about it, it's just life. Of course that could just be me lol

I hate this forum and all the other forums asking stupid questions. They always start with "I was talking with." What do you plan to gain by asking such a stupid question on an anime site. Or in general? You asking why somebody likes something is just you NOT thinking and trying to get someone else to do it. End.

I'm sorry to hear that you hate this forum post, but I think you misunderstand what I was asking. For the forum I am not wondering why people like/dislike any one thing, but what people's thoughts are as to why people like to hate on entertainment and its fans for it being simple, etc. The reason for the back-story was to give a sort of lead-in context to my question.

"What do plan to gain by asking such a stupid question on an anime site."
I intend to gain other people's insights, since there are many different kinds of individuals out there on the internet, I would like to know what they think on this matter.

Are you asking people to give something a chance before hating on it?

Kinda yeah. A lot of people just take their personal opinion as fact, so at that point critical thinkng isn't really an option for them

I was talking to my friends the other day about the fact that I don't understand why certain rap songs are popular. I essentially asked them why they like listening to famous/rich people talk about how much money, cars, girls, etc. they have or how 'hard' they are. If someone was bragging to me like that I would find them pretentious and annoying, but because they put a beat and say it rhythmically it magically becomes acceptable? They immediately attacked me saying that since I think my choice in music is better that makes me pretentious. Even though I never said that, I argued that it doesn't make sense to say something is 'better' in a non measurable sense...
Anyway, long story short, I believe that people, in general, don't like to think too much. The most popular series of books, movies, games, etc. typically are not ones in which the audience gains insight, new knowledge, something to ponder on, etc. but are rather predictable, pandering, or simple feel good/sad experiences. This leads me to my main point, if it seems that in general, people don't like to think too deeply or analyze (and prefer simple, shallow entertainment experiences) why do people act like shows that aren't deep and complex are 'bad' and the fans should feel bad for liking them. Certainly there are many things that would nag at you like stink if you thought too hard about it (plotholes, tropes, predictability), but that isn't the point of entertainment! If people in general don't like to think about philosophical problems, analysis of chord progressions in a song, metaphysical implications of symbols, etc. then it makes little sense to think that more of it will increase entertainment... If people wanted stories that are realistic they would follow the most realistic thing to ever exist, REALITY. If people wanted the most thought provoking philosophical examinations of society they would read philosophy books. Some examples off of my head would be the hate towards Twilight (movies), Justin Bieber, pop music, the big 3, and the guilty crown. If people don't want to think too deeply while they are being entertained why hate them for it?

i'm confused about the last part, what about Guilty Crown?

Nope, people can hate certain things in entertainment all they want because I'm sure they probably have valid (for them) reasons. I am more curious as to what people think about why some people feel the need to prove that complexity/depth > simplicity/shallowness and put down others who don't want to think about such stuff and media that is 'simple' because of it. After reading some of the responses in this post I have come to the conclusion that I am actually more interested in what people think about why some people try to put equations to determine how 'good' something is and why we allow or even praise those that attack others while using such metrics. Sorry if my English is hard to understand, I'm not an eloquent speaker

It was just one of my examples of things people hate in the context of my question. Sorry for my original post being so long >_<

nah dude its cool, im just one of those people that thoroughly enjoyed Guilty Crown hahah because the plot holes made me think! kinda gave it that mysterious feel, i loved it. anyhow i think your post is very well thought out and informative; i enjoyed reading it actually because i feel the same, a lot of my friends like mainstream music and imo, i just dont like it at all.. the musical theme there is all the same and thats what bothers me. thanks for the quick response man i appreciate it.
