Baka and Test really surprised me. I've skipped over it before from the description but I've never laughed harder through an anime than that one.

Kimi ni Todoke really surprised me as well. Been awhile (Clannad will always be on top for the highest amount of heart strings pulled for me) since something pulled at my heart strings as much as this one did.

Xam'd: Lost Memories besides the awesome opening and ending themes I was very impressed with the whole anime.

"Amnesia," though I can't stop myself from wanting to wring Heroine's neck, regardless of how much I like the anime. I'm still waiting for the last episode here on Crunchyroll, however.
"Now and Then, Here and There." I'll put it this way; I ended up crying several times.
"Gurren Lagann." I expected it to be average, at best, because the beginning is pretty dumb... I sure was wrong. I cried a few times, too.

I really underestimated Gurren Lagann. I thought it was ok with only one amazing character. Then episode 8 blew me away and it only got better.

Madoka Magica, One Piece, Mirai Nikki, and Hunter X Hunter 2011.

The top underestimated anime for me goes to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood though, the beginning was too slow for me. I liked how intense the buildup was, it just didn't seem to be using anything it stored up. Thus the epic ending, and in the literal sense of the word epic.

My ultimate weakness is the Japanese version of early 20th century Europe. The Full Metal Alchemist and Valkyria Chronicles settings are something I'd like to see more of.

The monogatari animes. I dislike 90% of Shaft productions but the weird dialog and characters grew on me.

I'd say the pet girl of sakurasou ended up being something really special.

Milky Holmes. I initially dropped it less than 10 minutes into the first episode thinking it was just moeblob, but my kid wanted to watch to see the reason for some buzz about it elsewhere. After not too long, you realize it's just parody/satire; no one who's supposed to be a detective could be that stupid, and I was surprised to find myself literally laughing at it in a lot of places. There isn't much that makes me do that, even outside of anime. Baka and test did, but I liked that one from the start.

So I kinda underestimated magi but I got really bored at home and ended up watching it and I ended up licking it because of its comedy. And I also remember underestimating to love ru and boy was I missing a lot, right now to love ru is one of my favorite harem/echii.

So are there any animes that you thought you wouldn't like but ended up licking it or loving it?

Hunter X Hunter - I thought it would be really "kiddy" but it can be very mature at times, it's my favorite ongoing show right now.

Baka and Test - I had seen it on Netflix, the cover and description didn't seem too interesting. I decided to give it a chance one day and really liked it, it's hilarious.

Girls und Panzer - I don't think it's amazing but I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would, the tank battles are pretty exciting sometimes.

Bakemonogatari was initially disappointing, because it didn't meet any of the expectations I had for it, but then it met and surpassed all the expectations that I didn't know would apply to it. Very strange and awesome show.

The World God Only Knows was something I stayed away from because it didn't sound interesting, and I just watched it on a whim. Best, most hilarious show ever Bonus points to the MUSIIIIIIIC! It's got the best score of any non-musical show I've seen.
