Angelic Layer the anime, though not a prequel due to storyline changes, is related to Chobits. The old "dolls" from Angelic Layer were the ground work for the persocoms in Chobits:

Connections to Chobits

- In the manga, the pre-story pages show faux newspaper articles that mention tidbits from other series.

- Piffle Princess is the store where Misaki buys supplies for Hikaru. This store is also found in other Clamp creations such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Legal Drug, xxxHolic, Kobato., and Chobits, but is also Tomoyo's company in Tsubasa:Reservoir Chronicle

- In page 16 of volume 7 of Chobits, Kaede Saito's story of her death was told by her brother Minoru. Misaki, Sai, and Ohjiro are in the background, standing by her bed in one panel and crying with her back turned after she dies.

- In page 103 of volume 7 of Chobits, silhouettes of the legendary Angelic Layer dolls (Shirahime, Blanche, Wizard, Suzuka, and Hikaru) are shown as Chitose tells Motosuwa the truth about her husband's earlier work with the Angelic Layer game.

- Mihara is a known last name to be used by two popular Clamp characters. Chiharu Mihara of Cardcaptor Sakura and Icchan Mihara. Chiharu's last name Mihara is used by Icchan Mihara, who is also the late husband of Chitose Hibiya of Chobits. Chitose used the Mihara last name in another Clamp work Kobato.

It should be noted, though, that the manga of Angelic Layer is different from the Anime. As such, there are many who are positive the Chobits manga is a sequel Angelic Layer and there are some that feel CLAMP hamfisted the relationship between the two as an after thought.

That's not exactly what you're looking for, but it's a bit of something.

Angelic Layer is supposedly a prequel to Chobits. Although with CLAMP its hard to tell whether its a prequel in the same "world" or in some alternate dimension, as CLAMP frequently uses characters and their stories in different series using the parallel dimensions route.

Probably not, the original is a really weird series for me that I only really like due to the characters and the setting is sort of just a backdrop. There just doesn't feel like there's enough left to explain in the Chobits universe to merit another series set in it. At least in my opinion.

I haven't seen Chobits, but if I were to I'd wait to see the prequel first then follow it up with Chobits. If the prequel sucks I may drop it and forget the older series.

yes, if the original was good, why not watch the pre-quel/sequel?

Ever heard of Angelic Layer?

It takes places in the same universe as Chobits, only a couple years before. So yes, it is something of a prequel since characters from there appear in Chobits, and an important character from Angelic Layer plays a big role in the creation of the Chobits persecoms.

However, as a big Clamp fan (the creators) and a person who has read every single Clamp manga, I can honestly say Angelic Layer is one of their poorer mangas. And I did not like the anime either.

The Chobits anime was okay, but the manga is way better.

I would watch it.

I also like to ask why someone need to type a long drawn out sentence just to answer the thread when a simple yes or no can suffice.

Is it the fault of the poster that the thread is poorly constructed? or is it the fault of the creator for making poor threads. hmm...
