This thread is pretty good bait. Like this guy knew what he was doing. He hooked his line, cast it and twenty five pages later...

Don't harbor any unrealistic expectations or act obsessively in your zeal and you should be fine as any other tourist.

Either you want to go to Japan or not, no one gives a shit. You're a tourist, have fun in your limited time there. If someone belittles you, shrug it off. One man's (womens) opinion isn't the rest of Japans opinion. mhm yeah.

I was there in 1971 and I loved it.
I was 21 yrs old and spent the whole time with a cute 20 yr old Univ. student.
I returned to Seoul, Korea for the next 5 months and we wrote to each other every other week
.

I never was called any names but got a couple dirty looks from older folks (the age of my parents)

I would love to go back now and make a visit to the ANIME MECCA. I really would like to make a cycle tour
of the more rural areas to see the many temples.

If you ever return to Japan, I'd definitely do at least one day of cycling. I went on a trip in 2014 with a company called Gadventures that included a full day bicycle ride through the Kibi Plains, a very nice trip that includes temples, gardens, a pagoda, and a refuge for Japanese Cranes. The name of the trip is called "Backroads of Japan" and it starts in Tokyo and ends in Kyoto. You also visit Nagano where you get to see the famous snow monkeys, Matsumono with its beautiful black samurai castle, and Takayama, a very charming town with a fascinating morning market and some beautiful architecture.

When I go there, I'll pretend that I don't know anime and avoid looking at manga at book stores. One thing for certain is that I won't wear a Naruto T-shirt over there.
