It is really sad about that person have been treated really badly and rudely just because he was from US

I'm thinking wow is that really bad there that I shouldn't go.

maybe I should stop thinking of going. R

it may be this person just got badly bad luck with people he met with, it is definitely not smart to go on your own to a place that you never met before it's good to have a friend to go with

badly rudeness not respectful people r definitely everywhere in this entire universe of this world, wherever you go they're always going to be not respectful people out there

Actually, I had an interesting discussion with a person I met (who is now a close friend) on like a 2h trip to a camping place [It was basically a first year camp organized by the College of the Asia Pacific for students doing degrees related to it at ANU.) Weirdly enough, a conversation about politics turned into one about Japan. [As we were both doing Japanese Courses, he was doing it as part of his Bachelors of International Relations, and I was doing it for the Arts part of my dual degree, since my major for it was/is Japanese Language.]

He said something similar, when I mention I would like to go to Japan, and he honestly turned to me and said, "Please don't tell me you are only going there for anime," to which I promptly said no. Yes, it would be of interest, but for me, it was more of sightseeing, mainly because I wanted to see things like Tokyo Tower, Mount Fuji, as well as not only architecture, natural landscapes and old ruins/locations, but the many Shinto shrines around Japan [As the whole design of Shinto shrines, has always piqued my interest]. Frankly, travelling the world seeing different sights is something I want to do after I graduate.

Yes, some Japanese can be racist, and intolerant, but so can anyone else. That's the way of life. A couple of bigots should not stop you from visiting Japan. Sure, I think going there purely to visit something like Akihabara, or as an Otaku [something I don't call myself, because technically, it's a bit of an insult in Japan........ I mean, it literally means, 'Honorable Home', or in lay-mans terms, someone addicted to staying at home. Also, it's not inclusive of anime, just it's used most commonly for it. But you can be an Otaku (or be compulsively obsessed) with just about anything, like being a Military Otaku, or something like that ] is frankly a stupid reason and a waste of money to travel, as it is actually pretty expensive for International Flights, and that money could be better spent.

If you are going there for tourism, and anime culture just happens to be a bonus, then I would think the cost would be justified. As with any country, the rule of thumb is, don't act like a pr*k, and be d**k to their culture, or way of life, and it should be fine. Believe it or not, Japanese people can be very polite when they want to. I mean, this is a whole language that literally has a polite and casual way of speaking depending on how you conjugate, or change verb and adjective endings, or even sentence structure.

If It wasn't for those atomic bombs japan would be our 51st state. Always remember they were the aggressor not we. They were given the opportunity to prevent both the firebombs and nuclear attack. They refused surrender at the cost of many (far to many) innocent lives. If you want to experience an ancient culture do it. WW1 and WW2 were last century and the world has changed a lot since then.

now op is attempting to insult all of us because we disagree, even suggests that a brony is a human being relatable to that of being an otaku. What is life

I'd like to visit japan one day, ye I would call myself an otaku while I was there, but I'm british. only qaulms I have is that I don't know japanese, I don't like foreigners coming into my country without a lick of english and I doubt the japanese people want someone there who doesn't know their language. the otaku thing is well, everyone on this thread would know it's basically the japanese geek. it's used for an obsession over something to the point it conjures up the image of a loner who doesn't leave the house to engage in that obsession, which is actually something you rarely see in reality. I have read blogs here and there about them being "if it aint japanese it's no good" which mostly applies to people, but look hard enough and you should find japanese people interested in cultures and other things from outside. the people aren't very sarcy and their honour system can stop them from being rude at times, so if they have a problem with you they wouldn't say a thing.

what I would hate though is to finally learn japanese, go to this country with some amazing culture and end up feeling as alone as I do here

I've been to Japan three times, fantastic place, and the Japanese people really go out of their way to accommodate gaijins who can't speak Japanese in shops etc. The only time Japanese have problems with foreigners is when they get loud, drunk and obnoxious. Japan's a polite society so as long as you're polite you will have a great time.

Ah, this thread is revived again, fun times.

But as everyone says, mostly the older gen of Japs are "racist" towards foreigners which is pretty common in many places in Asia really but the younger gen are more open minded. Just like how many of you have an interest in Japanese culture, they have interests in other cultures but their own too. Hell, my friend's cousin visited Japan and she met someone randomly through a forum post and the girl toured her through Tokyo so it's not all bad as it seems.

Just study up on some of the customs and make sure you don't do anything disrespectful and you should be fine.

This applies to all countries, not just Japan as some people seem to believe.
