Japan is fine. As long as you are polite and show them respect they are they are very nice, just don't act like idiot.

I want to go to Japan to learn kendo (Edit: I've been practicing kendo for 5 years, it's important to me and I want to further my education there, not start it), I don't call myself an otaku cuz I'm not and I'd love to have Japanese people point out how different I am. Just like probably any other place in the world, I'm pretty sure what Japanese people get hung up on is not that you're there, but they just don't want you to try to be like them. Of course I'm not saying you should go and disrespect their culture and act like your's is superior, but rather just don't put so much energy into trying to imitate them and act like an expert on their culture who's there to further research them, but show that you're interested in learning about them, respecting their traditions while you're there and sharing the culture you were raised in with them. You're not Japanese, you can't become one but if you want to visit the country, and even if you decide you want to stay there, that's something pretty common in today's world and I think the vast majority of Japanese people will respect that, as long as you respect the difference between yourself and them. In essence, just don't be a weeaboo (I'm using that as literally as it can be used, not the lightly used connotation of the word).

I have no intention of going to Japan, not American either, but your logic is a bit flawed. While Japan did, indeed, get bombed - they aren't without fault in that situation and it would be silly to think that they'd attack people too young to know better. Remember, Japan was responsible for pearl harbor, they did work with the Third Reich, and they were enemies of the Axis - that is why they were bombed in the first place. You don't see people hating on the Japanese for being here just because of this. Though, I'm sure there are radical groups and individuals here that would - same with in Japan.

But, that is the exception to the rule. You and your friend are making a vast assumption and generalization based on a culture that has attempted to improve relations with every country possible since WW2. And a country that adores American culture and products just as much as Americans adore theirs.

I feel like viewing Japan as a ultra-xenophobic "waito piggu go homu" land is just another way to fetishize and exoticize it.
