-The overused cliche of the baddy having a tragic life story, which is revealed as his life flashes before his eyes. Usually involves a lack of friends.
-Main characters being orphans
-Male characters going after the main girl because "he can't understand" why she wouldn't like him. Usually he is amazed how she doesn't throw herself at him.
-Incredibly stupid, big eyed, large chested girl that seems to be a staple for a lot of anime series. Usually is the source of another cliche, long winded "deep" friendship speeches.
- The perfect one. Usually with the highest grades, best athletic ability, super good looking blah blah. At least try to develop some sort of characterization.
-The feminine male character. It's just not even surprising for me anymore when they reveal their true gender.
-Amnesia, forgetting one's identity.

I love Anime, but I needed to rant...

All of that.

Yeah, or the whole broken home routine. The I'm-a-snot-and-angry-with-parents. Sure, it's highschool, but if that's normal, then I lived a great highschool.
Don't forget the I'm-sick-for-some-mysterious-cause. And supposedly, this sickness must magically disappear at the end of the story from turning one's life around, having good relationships, or magic - heaven forbid doctors save the child.

Perfect character - Oh, you mean the author putting themselves into the story?

I think the Japanese got the idea that if you're good at drawing girls and not guys, just draw a girl and label it a guy, which also brings up another thing that gets old:

- Teachers who look as old as their students.

The weird tendency to make geniuses crazy/evil/insane.

Apocalyptically stupid villains (you know the ones, the guys who have this amazing plan that will destroy everyone in the world that's unworthy, which almost always excludes them for some reason... except never actually does. Usually also the crazy genius above).

The 'actually good' version of the above (ala Rei in Vividred)

Oh and bonus: The 'everything is going to hell episodes'. The 2-3 before the series or arc finale where the writers feel the need to make everything as bad as they possibly can to make the inevitable good guys win more dramatic.

-Male character lead who's weak and pathetic but is an accidental magnet for panties/boobs and somehow is surrounded by hot female friends
-Male character lead's best friend who is perverted as fuck, though his friend is relatively clean, and tries his hardest to get his other friends involved with his creepy activities; im not even talking regular healthy teen who watches porn but hardcore creep who takes pictures of girls, pesters them about their breast sizes, and stalks them when they change
-Girl who somehow always gets into weird sexual positions which are completely accidental in most cases and blames it on the weak protagonist aforementioned, her only learned words are "idiot" and "pervert"
-Shy, clumsy girl who is a hazard to everyone and should be bubble wrapped routinely
-Tsundere (most of them are terribly written) usually also tied with girl who falls into strange positions
-the overuse of rape as a trauma for a character's personality issues and how the survivors are then seen as fragile, babies who must be tiptoed around because they might break down any moment

Man there's too much to go on with.

The outcasted main character who has a very few friends suddenly is surrounded by hot girls. Haganai Series and Highschool DxD are examples. Don't get me wrong I did enjoy watching the thoses series. It's just that WHAT in the fuckin' hell is wrong with their schoolmates?!

A romantic female lead tends to trip over herself, whereupon the male lead will always reach out and catch her (distance of said lead to clumsy female character is never taken into account). Characters will then proceed to gaze at each other in wonder and blush. How does being accident prone translate to being cute?

While I think that sometimes this is a "klutz=cute" thing, I've usually seen it as more a "OMG! I got to touch her body. *swoon/blush/nosebleed*" kind of thing.

Yeah, it works quite nicely in Kimi Ni Todoke and Anohana, where it creates tension between the characters. It is overused though- I'd love to see examples of the male leads doing the tripping instead : )

Actually, the male lead does often trip whereupon he lands faceplant into a pair of boobs/crotch or his hands extend to grab said items. It is pretty much in every damn shoujo, the stereotypical ones at least.

2) Cliffhangers and comebacks at end of episode that reset to zero come the beginning of next episode. This is especially prevalent in long running shounen series.

What I'm talking about is when they leave you with somebody in imminent danger, or making a dramatic comeback in the last scene of an episode, only to trivialize its impact come the beginning of the next episode.

I hate overused cliffhangers in general. Anime series that use this technique make me want to watch the next episode after the next, so I usually finish in one sitting. But then I get confused whether I actually liked the series or if I just succumbed to the technique that the creators used to keep the viewer watching.
