People hating SAO? Wow, I thought I was the only one who hated it, since I don't see very many other people who didn't like it. There must be a loud minority of other people like me. Well, then again, I usually don't go on threads specific to SAO, and most "Over Rated" threads are filled with people dissing Evangelion for the millionth time (Come on, it isn't THAT bad. Heck, it beats the hell out of SAO). Well there are quite a few reasons I didn't like SAO.

1. The deaths didn't leave really any kind of impression on me, since most of the character deaths were so underdeveloped that they didn't even seem human.
2. When I want a romance, I will go watch one. When I want generic shonen action, I will go watch one. While it isn't a bad idea to have a bit of romance with your action, or a bit of action with your romance, a 50/50 mix dulls both of them to the point where neither are very good, and SAO is a perfect example of that.
3. Kirito has a very bad case of Generic Shonen Fighting Charater-itis. He is just weak enough for the villains to be able to force him to use his super-special ultra powerful minute learned super blast, or whatever Street-Fighter or Dragon Ball inspired special move they decided to show in that episode. But even with this, he still makes pretty much all other regular characters seem like complete pansies, or pathetic losers compared to him. Seriously, what the heck man? I'm tired of having this character archetype. How about something fresh.
4. Asuna really isn't that great a romance character. At first she seemed interesting, but as the show went on, she switches from mysterious female protagonist to the namby-pamby "I must have my hero or I wont survive" character type. I'm not a fan of Tsunadre characters, but at least they usually have some sort of driving factor other than their need for the main character.
5. One of the two redeeming factors of the series, the villain, never really had any kind of conclusion, and serves simply as a living plot device, which made me very sad.

Too Long/Didn't Read version:
The characters suck, and the admittedly excellent animation doesn't save the show for me.

I think one of the main unappealing factors is how over-rated it came to be. Yes, the score and production were pretty well-done, but the characters lacked development and pretty much fell into boring archetypes. It appeals to the typical otaku stereotype: girls who play video games, imoutos, lolis, furries, and an anti-social protagonist that somehow garners the ability to make the aforementioned characters swoon over him. Originality is what's lacking.

Overall, SAO, in my opinion, was pretty good. Kajiura's score was epic, and the beautiful backdrops of the different levels of Aincrad were a pleasure to view, but it just doesn't deserve all the hype. It's just a re-hash of previously used ideas in a well-packaged box.

Oh, and tentacle monsters molesting Asuna.

That being said, I did enjoy the GGO arc of the novels.

I dropped it in episode three because the plot was terrible and the characters even worse. I couldn't connect with it so it doesn't matter if picked up later, if I don't enjoy it since the beginning then why would it pay off later? It's like I should only see a series at its best to become a fan? No, thanks.

I didn't think SOA was bad it was appealing and interesting to the end. Might of been A hack/Sign copy but at least it was still good.

People are saying
Its the Cancer of anime
Hack/Sign Ripoff
No development
Stupid romance
Etc..etc..

I need to know wtf happend. It went from super Fan boys to super hate.....???

Beats me, I liked both .hack and SOA. I guess it was made for people like me. I will admit that some plot points felt rushed, but I think it's because they didn't include some of the material in the novels that fleshed the relationships and developments out better.

I can see how people how people love SAO but I cant see how people can hate SAO but I can see how there are people out there who can be disappointed on the wasted potential that SAO had giving SAO a overall rating of 6-7/10 but then fanboys would be like *ahem* "I GIVE THIS SHOW A FUCKING 10/10 CUZ OF THE ROMANCE BETWEEN KIRITO AND ASUNA!!!" while Haters overall elitest's that either love or hate

Are you talking about the people who post comments on the live stream? Just want to make sure

You do know half those people troll comment the stream right?

That's a bad way to gauge how well liked or disliked SAO is lol

The only reason I can't really watch SAO is because my teenage mentality can only focus on two things at once and sometimes I lost some parts of the plot or other important details when left and right boobs were on the screen. O.O

SAO was interesting until they beat the first boss. After that it went downhill, but was still enjoyable. The entire 2nd half of the series was a complete waste of time, though. I somehow trudged through it to the end expecting that perhaps the climax would salvage the story, but in the end I just laughed at how bad it was.

The matter of the fact is people hate it because they're either natural haters or because they have somewhat unorthodox opinions. Most haters opinions rely on a lot of stuff that wasn't all that true though which gets me really confused. A lot hate on how the novel wasn't like the anime. Well over half of movie novels aren't like the movie so not seeing any correlation there. Another is the way the battle scenes where screened, like wtf are you serious? SAO made so many amazing and popular amv's just because of how well choreographed the battle scenes where, so definitely no correlation there. Then there's the whole pointless romance idea. Hold on there, I didn't know that a work of art had to fall under a specific genre now and I'm pretty sure this wasn't a bad thing because if you attract an audience of romance, comedy, mystery, action, etc., lovers all in one anime then your hits are going through the roof. Adding to that the romance was well strategically placed considering the storyline to this anime. The whole mystery on who's killing people in safe zone's episodes should have caught interest in mystery lovers, and then the action was undeniably well choreographed as I mentioned above which should have attracted that whole Naruto/Bleach/Action lovers category to the anime.

Now the things I could understand for people hating on it. The rushed storyline was kind of abrupt and could have caused some aggravation to the viewers, not going to lie on that one. Another was a huge change in the storyline where it just went from floor 88 or whatever they where on to a completely different game with basically the same storyline as before. I'm sure a lot of people wanted to see the 100th floor and could have caused irritation as well. The last thing I could understand is that it's just not peoples type of anime and they where like meh this is boring, but then that forces up something else I don't understand. Why did you watch it then?!

Ok so my opinions on the anime are that the action and romance was really interesting and well thought out all though I was hoping for longer battle scenes to be honest, but that could just be because they where so good I wanted to see more (that's probably it too). I think the two to three mystery episodes where a waste of the story line where they could have focused on the current floor they where on or something more interesting on the base of the type of anime it was leaning towards to category wise. I love the whole focus on the romance, but I also think they took it a little far on the whole vacation from the game. The last thing is that the whole Alfhiem Online was great and all, but I hated the fact that the whole arc just swerved in a different direction. I really wanted to see the 100th floor, plus a good boss battle with the creator of SAO.

To summarize it all up, to state whether or not why the anime had so many haters was pretty much because there was bound to be that group who just hates or has there own crazy opinion on things. It held up strictly with viewer opinion and what the viewer is into.

Because the anime was full of shit, in which the shit put in didn't needed to be in the anime, the shit I'm talking about are the side stories.

SAO ep 1, 2 skip to ep (protagonist gets recruited), skip to beating last boss. would been fine as a 6 episode ova.

Introduce fairy dance as another 6 ep ova or give it a series to "hype" it up even more, since the 6 ep ova would of been better.

The main failure of this anime is, the adaption from the novels, since the novels are based around a composition of ARC's. Each ARC needed to have it's own time to debut and shine. Combining two ARC's together was a failure of the directing and green lit team.

If SAO had been SAO for a 12 first season, it would of ended with a HUGE cliff hanger and if it had been done well it would of gotton a second season fairy dance. I do understand that the company wanted closure by combining the two ARC's, but now look how much hate and love this anime has received because of poor planning and execution of the story base.

Well the creator loved the anime even more, so I guess that means something

SAO was well animated and stayed true to it's source material. I don't know why that made for so many arguments and vitriolic statements about it over the course of its run (and beyond). People just need to learn to reign in their expectations and appreciate what's in front of them.

In my opinion SAO was a diamond in the rough, because there's a lot of crappy anime out their that get too much praise. It was weird for me to then see people who swoon over mediocre anime drink the SAO haterade. If I don't like something I just don't watch it. I might make a short comment or two about my displeasure, but I won't waste more than a few seconds on it. I really can't imagine ranting and raving about an anime the way people did for SAO.

Also, this thread is new and exciting

wow thats a long one...Novasis

All I can say I think people were very very very disappointed.

As a whole I liked and I enjoyed watching SAO and I felt the adaptation in the ALO arc was better but the adaptation on the Aincrad arc was a not well done at all. It was rushed , they jumped around trying to develop other characters from the side stories and from a very serious premise at the begining , it got all light and fluffy with a harem feel. Wherein a lot of gamers are very disappointed.

Also the romance between the main characters was also rushed . The story telling could have been done better.

If they made the ALO arc in 24 episodes then the transistion to the next arc in a different season would have made people ready for it as a result A lot didnt like ALO arc at all .

And then you have people who just hate SAO becuase it was so popular ...go figure..

I am not saying that the books were perfect either but it has a nice story telling style, just wished the adaptation was indeed better.

Since I like the ALO arc better , I am cosplaying for that part.
