I wouldn't say I hate it (I genuinely like the novels) but the anime was pretty horrible, especially since they opted to adapt things that should have never been adapted. (SCREW YOU, FAIRY DANCE! Worst. Arc.)

My issue is that is so overly hyped. Its not that great. First arc was genuinely interesting, if not full of melodrama. You had a loner, who was cold due to events transpiring around. You had the mysterious, badass female love interest. You also had a great supporting cast and an awesome villian.

The second arc, however......... Ouch.
Said badass love interest is reduced to a damsel in the distress, her personality completely changes from being badass to generic love interest #23. Not to mention how poor the the arc was in the novels.

Now, Phantom Bullet, however.......
Let's say you have more chemistry between the two main characters in that arc because said female main character doesn't fall for MC.

There's also the idea of good writing. As SAO was written years ago, it shows, especially when you compare it to Accel World. The difference in quality is so large, given the fact that AW was written so long after SAO. By the same author no less!

There's also the odd point that SAO does better with the arcs that actually have characters that don't fall for the MC, or at least not right away. There's a reason I think the Aincrad and Phantom Bullet arcs are my favorite.

I'd argue that .hack did 'trapped in an MMO' story better than SAO did, before it found its own footing with Phantom Bullet.

Of course, all IMO.

Lol, wow... I almost don't know what to say... overall, I liked it and I think the majority of people liked it as well; just check the ratings on myanimelist: http://myanimelist.net/anime/11757/Sword_Art_Online Out of 86,000+ users, it gets an 8.3! I'd say that's pretty good. Anyway, everyone's got their own opinion, if you like it, that's great, if you don't, that's fine too!

It has been very sucessful so I think it is just that the haters stand out more. There is always someone who does not like something. I think part of it was most people really liked the first arc and not the second one as much. So people base their like and dislike on the fact their expectations were not met. Even though they probably would have liked the second arc if it went first.

Honestly, I've only watched up to episode 12. It's really interesting, but I guess I don't really feel like watching it.

I'll just ramble now if you guys don't mind...The second half is what killed it for me, the main reason being Suguha as a character.

First off, the series tries to dodge the whole brother/sister thing by stating that she's not ACTUALLY his brother, just his cousin, and acts as if that just makes it A-OK. Not only that but her crush on Kirito gets a ridiculous amount of focus. I swear, like every two minutes we were getting Suguha being all pouty and going "ONII-CHAN WILL NEVER LOVE ME" with sad music playing in the background. What makes all of this worse is that we know damn well by this point that Kirito wouldn't pick her over Asuna in a million years, so it's even more pointless.

Kirito's development in the first half is well-pronounced, but the time-skips everywhere make it seem like Asuna is a different person every time we see her. One episode she's shy, then she's a textbook tsundere, and then she's super close to Kirito. It's rather jarring. I feel like ALO should've been cut out entirely so that their getting to know each other could've been fleshed out a little more.

Regarding Sugou, I would've liked if he were just a normal man who was betrothed to Asuna and loved her to death. It would've added an interesting level of depth to Kirito and Asuna's relationship and how much validity it had in the real world....instead he just turns out to be a typical anime supervillain the audience is supposed to hate. That's another thing about the series, it was far too melodramatic at times.

It showed a lot of promise but it really should've ended once they were done in SAO.

Because its heavily over hyped, but when you take closer a look at it, its not deserving of half the hype.
Ok first arc was really interesting, but they rushed the hell out of it.

And 2nd arc was just flat out a mess, no other way to describe it. First a deus ex machina to give kirito his abilities from SAO(Really? really? a game that has a completely different character and battle system, is more spell based than passive and active skill based and yet you actually try to tell me that the stat system, character values, dmg values, are near exactly the same so they can cross over? I know Reki never coded an MMO, but at least look up your material if you're writing about it.) so he can remain in his 'easily kick everyone's rear end's without the slightest hint of effort and turn everyone else's efforts in the game irrelevant repeatedly and smash common knowledge of the game universe("Spriggans having illusions are useless? Ha! I'm the main character, we'll see about that!" *transform into giant monster and never do it again and no one else EVER did anything like that*)

Hint, theres a lot of things in MMO's, but originality isn't one of them. No matter what you do, someone else has already done it.

And because hes the main character so lets just have him beat the strongest player in the game who must eat sleep and breath ALO.

Then the journey, which was quite crappy, and random for the most part, and no MMO staples to be seen at all. The idea of each race having a longtime leader that has ACTUAL power, which I found hard to believe. Clans, guilds, ok but a whole race? Not with your typical 'don't tell me how to play my game' MMO player.

Asuna is pretty much reduced to a plot device like Kairi from Kingdom Hearts.

Sugou is the one dimensional 'big bad villain doing big bad things' for no apparent reason other than to be the villain because they never once deliberate on what exactly he intended to do with his mind control tech, and then throw in his groping and 'stealing away' asuna for the fanboy directed drama.

All in all, its not bad, in fact for what it is its a small cut above good, but its not great. The character development was weak, it was filled with archetypes, and they use a time skip as a short cut so they can marry off two people who for the most part should be strangers. Luckily the battle scenes, production value, and score help carry it, but even that couldn't float the abomination that was the ALO arc.

the series had potential. that potential was greatly squandered. not because of the Fairy Dance arc, but because of the Aincrad arc. granted the whole series was rushed and cut out a lot of the exposition and development, but the Aincrad arc suffered much more cuts than the Fairy Dance arc did. I did enjoy the anime, but I enjoyed it mostly because I read the novels. the novels explain things so much better while giving time for development of the characters and the world around them. the anime makes a great accompaniment to the novels, but I can understand why people would be displeased if they only watched the anime.

The first half was good, .hack clone but still good at least he had a goal and was working towards it. I didn't like the massive time skips between episodes either. The series could have created so much character depth if they actually put time into it. What I think I liked most was the ultrarealistic take that an environment like that would have psychologically, like: people actually killing themselves, losing their moral compass and killing others, etc. The second half however is pretty much horrible. It felt rushed, bland, and overall unsatisfying. I enjoyed the introduction of a couple new characters but aside from suguha none of them got any screen time. The villian was terrible: some sadistic perv that got off on dead bodies, it wasnt even that I hated him for being a bad guy, I just hated him because he was a creeper, basically his masterplan stuck in my mind much less than him trying to have sex with a girl in a coma. That and the removal of the fear of death kinda ruined it for me, so now Kirito doesn't have to worry about the consequences and can just go psycho die, and get to the nearest checkpoint to try again.

For those of you who don't want to read that paragraph
My conclusion: 1st half - decent action, good take on an already established plot enjoyed the psychologically accurate portrayl, disliked the lack of character development and massive time jumps. 2nd half - Introduced some new characters, none really got any screen time, removed the tension, still no character development.

I wouldn't say it was bad, I actually enjoyed it personally. It was good, not necessarily great, but certainly a memorable series.

I think the reason it is getting more hate than it did during the series is that now that it is over (temporarily) people seem to look back in retrospect and realize the faults more, especially people who dislike massively hyped series. With the amazing flop the series took with part two, it's no wonder people want to look at it poorly, because to be honest, Alfheim was exactly the opposite of what the fans wanted. No romance with Kirito and Asuna, another RPG with fairies, and rape. I'll spare the ranting.

Either way, If you had to ask the question "Would you go back and rewatch it if you could?" then I would answer yes. That sums it up.

First half- 6 or 7/10
Second Half- 2 or 3/10
Overall- 4.5/10

It's bad, but it's not the abomination that people make it out to be. A show that just couldn't leave well enough alone
