Maybe y'all can help me figure this out. I remember a LONG time ago. Back during VHS. I rented an anime cassette that had the first 4 episodes or so of an anime. I cannot remember it's name. It is about a prince. During the credits/opening there was a clash of armies on horseback in a very heavy fog. Despite recommendations, the head general calls foolishly for attack. It changes back and forth from these scenes to credit scenes. The army losses and the main story is about the crown prince trying to get home etc etc. That's all I remember but it always stuck with me that opening. Does ANYone know which anime that may be?

Sounds an awful lot like The Heroic Legend of Arslan but I'm not 100% sure because I'm just going off memory. I've seen it a couple of times and actually just got on DVD, although I haven't watched the DVD yet. I guess if I whipped out the DVD I would figure it out very quickly for you, but I don't have it on me right now! I really love this anime. The plot is great and the animation beautiful.

Yeah pretty sure its the Heroic Legend of Arslan. My wife has the VHS tapes packed up somewhere and I don't currently have a VHS player, so I can't check. I haven't seen it myself(probably should) but my wife says that it sounds like it might be what you are looking for and a quick check on wikipedia seems to indicate that it fits the plot you mentioned.

You are both correct. That is definitely the one. If you only knew how many years this has bugged me! THANK YOU!
