I stare at the ceiling and mull hings over. The first set of possibilities is:

1. I see why they did what they did, and judge that perhaps it's not so bad.
2. I don't understand why they did what they did, so I can't really get angry until I learn more.

If either of these cases occur, then I've probably calmed down. This is the most common conclusion. I find most differences are simply a matter of not understanding why the hell someone would think a certain way, so usually once you give their side some thought, you can speak reasonably. The other possibility is:

I see why they did what they did, and it is insulting, moronic, or insensible.

Although this rarely happens, if it occurs, then I realize that I have the upper hand in argument, and anger becomes useless when I can incite shame. If I'm dealing with the type of person that doesn't consider reason, or is in a state of mind that is incapable of doing so, then I simply stop dealing with them. In the case of the roommate -- I move out. I should mention a couple of things first though. I don't get angry very easily, and that may have something to do with the fact that I only really associate with people that I like, and generally, the sentiment is mutual. Both of us want to maintain the relationship, so we can come to an understanding somehow. I normally don't get angry with someone I don't care about, because it's not a problem to just ditch them. I don't care enough about their actions or opinions to get angry. Plus, I usually run a tight ship with regards to my stuff, so it's not like things get broken or stolen or whatever. Even if they do break something somehow, usually anyone that is using my stuff has enough of my trust to warrant using them, and they are quick to offer to replace it.

I just got into an argument with my roommate (who I hate, but I've already made a thread about that so I won't elaborate) and then had a bit of a mental breakdown. The argument started it off and then it morphed into an anxiety attack. I had to drive home from college at midnight because if I stayed in my room I probably would have done something that would get me kicked out of school. Right now I'm at home and trying to calm down and study, but I'm shaking with anger. Usually I've just been annoyed by him but today I'm not in a good mental state.

Driving on the freeway usually calms me down, and it did for a bit, but I'm really not in a good mood right now. I'm trying to study but I can't focus for more than a minute.

How do you calm down when you get upset? I could use some suggestions.

Nothing.
I find going through life not thinking at all makes everything 100 times easier and more enjoyable.
See when you think you get anxious, you question, you wonder what your purpose is and if you think about it then those things are true. When you dont think none of them are true.
Id rather go through life as a tool for someone else, knowing that my purpose is for them, then to think about what my purpose is and question what i am doing then eliminating your purpose by doing so.

I noticed that being nervous was included in this topic.
I was a very shy kid back in the day, and I couldn't even look a person in the eye or -of course- speak in public.

Calming down from big speeches never worked for me and I always felt like throwing up before them.

However, after growing up, I finally took on the challenge of doing solo guitar + singing in our talent show by singing "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, and I can say that I've never been nervous since. Whether it be a thousand people in our conference hall or just simply making a speech to the school, I've never felt that annoying butterfly in my stomach since.

So, how did I calm down for my nervous self? ^^ I just dared to try. It's good advice for shy people. Not singing a song in front of your whole school lol, but just daring to speak in the first place.

I tend not to get upset, for the simple reason that I usually just don't give a shit :P. So I rarely get upset. But when I do, I squash the issue because its not worth my time to sweat little things nor do I want to ruin my day........When I was younger it was different, when I'd get upset I found it hard sometimes to let the matter go. During those moments I found talking it out w/ some1 helped, and if I couldn't speak to any1 about it I'd drive to the beach because it was my fave place to relax. Maybe you need your own little paradise to escape to
