So... I don't know how to confirm this, but I hear the preorders for this anime are in the double digits. True / False?

No, they found some defects in some so they tried to stop the release but on pre-release day some had already shipped. Not sure what the defects were. No date for the shipment yet. So they may only have actually shipped a few. I saw at least one shipped copy picture.

Has Zexcs ever done a season 2 of any anime from their studio yet?

The finale felt incomplete tbh but I'm not so sure if there will be a sequel or not to this..

I just started watching this and I'm loving it, I had heard so much bad things about it mainly because of the animation but I think it's perfect since it's a real representation of japan, the characters are vessels for the story which is really entretaining

AnimeKami,
You are almost there. Have you noticed that the characters seen in the distance have no faces? Notice that Nakamuras' favorite curse is "shitface"? Far from being "superficial" the character depictions are tied to the idea of masks and the 'face' we use to cover our true selves; specifically our 'shameful' sexual selves. I see the the minimal expressions on the (rotoscoped actors') faces as a reflection of how hard it is to see the true self. it's hard to show yourself or even know your self in middle school. The characters here are struggling to see each others' true character and their own. The audience is put in the same place by showing faces that only hint at what is going on inside the character. This goes against the anime tradition of extreme expressions, that leave no doubt about what a character is feeling. I think this is why so many people feel uncomfortable with this style.
cdmillions,
I don't think the intention was to make ugly characters, but characters that give the viewer doubts as to what the character is feeling. But you are right that the way they look is tied directly to to what the story is about; the false mask we wear to cover our self doubt and shame.
overall,
I think the pacing is slow because some of the story is carried in the images of the town. Like the scenes that we see in the traffic mirror being symbolic of the different paths Kasuga and his friends are taking. Not sure what the meaning of many of the recurring images are; just note that the "salt" sign and the bent "children crossing" traffic sign are obviously symbols of something. Maybe you have to be Japanese to get it.
