Here's an interesting bit of information:

On Japanese site NicoNico, a little over 48 percent of viewers said the show was great. Twenty percent said it was pretty good, while 8.4 percent said it was okay. In case you are interested, 16.5 percent said it was bad (the rest thought it wasn't very good).

The whole article is here: http://kotaku.com/well-this-anime-looks-different-thank-goodness-472015308

I always take these surveys with a grain of salt, especially since this would not be a representative sample. However, it roughly does correspond to what I've been seeing: there really isn't that much of a backlash about the animation style. Yes, some people are very unhappy and very vocal about what they've seen, but for the most part the majority of the audience is relatively happy with the show.

I know some of y'all think this show is cute but where did you get the "majority of the audience is relatively happy with the show"?

Maybe it'll grow on people, but as far as episode 1 is concerned, I've seen nothing but hate and little praise for this show.

Read the quote I posted and do the math. And I also qualified my statement saying take those numbers with a grain of salt. I also think the MAL and ANN ratings will change given time. It's too early to tell, but the ratings are primarily from people that are unhappy with the animation style.

We'll see.
Though I still think they should've made this into a drama instead.

People who've read the manga are giving it 1-2 stars and people who haven't have been giving it 4-5; or so the reviews seem to stipulate. I'm in the latter group and thought it was utterly brilliant. Already my favourite anime this year (excepting Gintama naturally). Those unsettlingly long, melancholy shots abetted by an echoing dark piano, the transience of facial expression, the way they've framed the cinematography to simulate live action and particularly the chilling way they made that transition into the credits were just something else entirely. As far as I'm concerned we've had more than enough of the 'moe moe' factor this season thankyou very much; in the mood for something with a bit more backbone or at the very least founded with that basic courage to stand apart from the habitual.

Anyway good or bad, I've no choice but to respect this anime because it'll leave a mark (or at worst a scar) which can only serve to galvanise the industry. Very interesting.

The people on ANN spamming it with low scores are largely people hating it because it deviates from the manga - as more people watch the future episodes it'll receive higher ratings, as it deserves so.
I started reading the manga at the same time as the anime aired, and the anime style is much better realised and effective. It's a case of people throwing a tantrum because they don't like change. Hopefully people fresh to the story can appreciate it for what it is instead of what it was originally

You should see 4chan's reaction to it. The most rational responses I've seen are on /r/anime, but not by much compared to MAL and ANN.

Im just going to leave it to finish, since I've heard the story is good (but dear god is it ugly) so that I can just marathon it and not have to force myself to get over that art every week.

I really liked the first episode. I like Lain and Boogiepop kind of stuff. I think I'm going to love this series.

I actually liked episode 1.

And then, the ED song happened and that creep me out.

I'm not good in horror cuz I'm a scaredy cat.

So now, I'm not sure if I should watch it or not.

I mean, the art is kinda nice because it's realistic. And even though the pacing is slow, I do like it because it's hideously real and for some reason, I appreciate that right now.
