Read! Read, read, read, read, and read some more. Any kanji in popular use off the jouyou kanji list will be ones you encounter. I find gaining vocabulary through reading to be best. I find it sticks if I encounter it in use, in context. When I try to simply read dictionaries I find it doesn't stick as well. Plus, this way you will find the kanji that are common for your interests. If you read about ghosts and mages then you may encounter different kanji than if you like to read romance novels.

For those who haven't gone through the school lists already, the list of the 2500 most frequent kanji is useful:
http://www.hellodamage.com/tdr/archive/7diary/byfreq.html
There are some on the school lists you will almost never encounter but others outside the jouyou kanji which are in fact quite common. If you learn them top to bottom you will learn the most useful ones first, the most common ones to encounter. Some light novel authors enjoy using particularly rare kanji just to make the readers resort to dictionaries.

But don't forget that you need to learn words, not just kanji. And idioms... again, I think both are best learned by encountering them while reading. Trying to simply memorize words by themselves doesn't work well for me. But what worked for me may not work for you...

Thanks! Do you know of any reading materials that would be useful and not too difficult? I enjoy most genres (I guess that means more kanji to learn ).
Not OreGairu, it is a bit challenging.

NouCome or Sakurasou for novels. Believe it or not, Bakemonogatari!

Nazo no Kanojo X, BTOOOM!, Tasogare Otome xAmnesia, Sukitte Ii na Yo, Chihayafuru for some manga.

Akutagawa for old short stories. Classic, great stuff.

Bakemonogatari?!?! That's quite the surprise! It seems like it would be difficult. I will definitely take this list into consideration. Thank you very much!

I just rewatched the last few episodes of SNAFU along with the OVA as part of rewatching the whole series again. I love it, just love it! And episodes 9-13 plus OVA 14. I hadn't read the novels before and my love for the series grew slowly, in a crescendo which really ramped up with those episodes around the school festival planning and excecution. I just love the interactions, the way the characters respond to others around them, the consequences of those actions and Hachiman's philosophies on life.
---

In the Outbreak Company thread, someone said they didn't like the way SNAFU ended. I have put my thoughts here instead of there... more appropriate I think.

Episode 13 is actually the FIRST chapter from novel 6.25 and the OVA is the first chapter of volume 7.5. They are side story novels so the chapters aren't really that connected but are meant to stand alone. They missed all of 6.5 and 6.75 and 7... but hopefully they will return to them in season 2.

The season was really supposed to end with episode 12. 13 was supposed to be a volume 7 bonus but they changed their mind and decided to broadcast it.

They did the first 6 novels in 12 episodes so there too they skipped about half of it. That's the real shame, it could easily have been 24-26 episodes if they hadn't skipped so much...

But it was always going to end mid sentence because that is how Wataru Watari is writing the novels.

Sakurasou was written even more like this, one novel literally ends on one sentence of dialogue and the next volume starts on the very next sentence, usually in the most suspenseful confession ever! Then you're dying for 3-4 months wondering what the other person says... but again, that is the point. To keep you gasping for air waiting for the next one so you have to buy it on release day so it doesn't sell out and you have to wait for a reprint (true story, happened to me, Sakurasou volume 8).

Other writers are different. Unbreakable Machine Doll and NouCome for example have a full epilogue every volume even though the afterward says "See you in the next volume!" in case that volume never comes they always wrap things up to an extent. Just different styles.

Wataru Watari is very introspective. Hachiman's inner throughts are his really, while in character, I think of the person Wataru Watari wishes he was (but obviously is not if you watch the bonus features on volumes 6 and 7 where he and Hachiman's VA go to the Mother Earth tourist farms). The anime only passes so many of those inner thoughts across as narration. It really works better in book form.

His afterwards are often my favorite part. Lately he has discussed the multi-media phenomenon that his series has turned into, very interesting discussion to see what he thinks about his novels becoming drama CDs, anime and a visual novel. In one of those afterwards, Wataru Watari calls his illustrator, ponkan8 a god but Wataru Watari may be the god really, god of Japanese literature at least.

I also love the end of volume 8. Not for plot points, but for philosophical arguments. As an example. As an example for discussion. Where he ponders what if life was like a game, with save points so you could go back and try all the decision points. About living life with or without regrets if you could try out all the choices, but how life would then be meaningless. How as a result, if you are person who wants to uphold the truth, if you want to have these sorts of thoughts, what sort of things would they be?

He's just a really cool guy, as you can see.

Finally, if in episode 13 he had gotten together with Yukinon or Yui then... his youth romantic comedy was be right... not wrong... right? And that would be... wrong... Now, a Shizuka sensei ending... I would be down with that. It would be oh so wrong... but oh so right at the same time... or Komachi...

I liked SNAFU a lot, however, as a stand along work the the ending was fulfilling. I understand that there was little that could probably be done to fix that without straying to far from the novels. The end result though, is that I can't recommend SNAFU to anyone who isn't a hardcore anime veteran who is used to a story just ending like that and I'm not interested in re-watching the series myself until I know there will be more. No matter how much I like it, a series I'm not interested in re-watching and can't recommend to friends is not one I can consider good. Hopefully, this will be fixed when there is a second season, but until then it is an unfinished anime. I hope Wataru Watari has the guts to do a Shizuka Sensei ending. It really is the one I want to see.

I love rewatching this series so I disagree but as to recommending it to a neophyte, I'm not sure. It is perhaps not for a beginner

Teacher ending would be legal so it is possible... My favorite game route so far.

Sister end is not legal but a former teacher should be legal. Current teacher probably not, person in position of influence.IANAL...

A second season more of Hachiman and the rest. I have high hopes for this one but at the same time kinda nervous. Hope the second season isn't bad and a let down.

Ladies and Gentleman,

I have incredible news. In another thread, there is a "2013 Battle" going on for a spot in the Finals. My Romantic Teen Comedy can make it to the Finals if it topples the Titans. We are winning now, but we need to close the deal.

Click on this Link to vote and remember to give a reason.

We got this peeps!
