This series will pick up the pace in the latter half from what i have seen from the novel spoilers. People shouldnt write this one off yet as some copy of haganai.

I agree in the comparison to Hagani. That seemed to turn into a harem (I'm not bad mouthing harems by the way just making the case for a difference between the two) quite quickly. Kodaka actually didn't want to be w/o friends. His hair and facial expressions made people fear him. However, Hikki actually doesn't want a harem nor cares whether he has friends or not. Plus, I enjoy reading Hikki's inner monologue because I'm sure like some other men around here we've thought similarly. I also enjoy the exchanges between Hikki and Yukino.

One of the main attraction of 8man, is his 180 turn from the typical protagonist. By typical I mean ones found in: harems, shounen, comedy, etc...

He grew up rejecting everything, has "bad luck" and has always the last guy. The 3rd rate aura of 8man makes him a 1st rate character.

Im not really getting the comparison to Haganai. The protagonist are completely different except for the delinquent misunderstanding. Also Kodaka is trying to get friends while Hachiman doesnt care if he has any. You could tell that Sena and Yozora where attracted to Kodaka while you can only assume Yui is attracted to Hachiman.

I love the high school life genre anime, but this anime changes the way I see the genre in a good way. Yukino doesn't seem to care about much, Yui wants to get along with everybody and Hachiman is going along with a situation he was forced to into and stays true to himself so far. I like Hachiman as in most anime when you have just 12 episodes they start with attitude then go soft in a short time. The season is almost half over and Hachiman is almost exactly the same as from the first episode. This anime is exceeding my expectations.

I hate nice girls.
Just exchanging greetings with them will get them on your mind.
Start texting each other and your heart will be set a flutter.
If they call you, you are done for.
Enjoy staring at your logs and grinning like a fool.
However, I won’t get fooled again.
That’s what your kind calls kindness.
If you’re nice to me, you’re also nice to others.
I always end up nearly forgetting that, Reality is cruel,
So I’m sure lies are a form of kindness.
Thus, I say kindness itself is also a lie.
I always ended up with these expectations,
and I always ended up with these misunderstandings.
Before I knew it, I stopped hoping..
A highly trained loner is once bitten, twice shy.
As a veteran on this battlefield of life,
I’ve gotten used to losing, that’s why I’ll always hate nice girls.
I figured I should post that quote from the monologue at the end, because it really sums up Hachiman's depressing world view perfectly. He is so cynical that he believes anytime someone is nice to him it is just because they are nice to everyone. Because of his rejections in the past he can't, or rather won't, comprehend the idea that anyone may like him as a person. And of course, when someone actually does come to like him, (i.e. Yui) he won't see what's right in front of him. It's kind of sad, but I think a lot of us can relate to being in a similar position at one point in our lives. Also interestingly, what he described as liking instead of kindness is basically exactly who Yukino is.

Everything about this show is exceeding my expectation so far. I went in expecting a funny but forgettable romcom, but it continues to surprise me with depth in the recent episodes. In fact, it's quickly becoming one of my favorites of the year.

That monologue was something else. I went back to watch it last night and the few minutes before it. I've been hooked on this show since episode 1.

Episode 5:

Episode itself was kind of weak but it was all worth it for the ending itself. And the maid outfits, can't forget about the maid outfits.
