This show manages to entertain me, and make me feel depressed as hell. I'm not 100% sure why, but episode 5's ending hit me really hard.

Hachiman haven't had much progress in becoming a social butterfly, as is evident by the ending of episode 5. For one, I wouldn't say he has any friends yet. Sure he has acquaintances, but he is still pretty much alone.

Nobody knows his hobbies, and he doesn't really know anyone else's hobby. Nobody knows where he lives, and he haven't tried finding out where anyone else lives.

When they all were at that workplace visit, even the trap didn't hang with him, the one you'd expect to be the most eager to do so. None of his "so called" friends did.

I thought about this when trying to fall asleep, but ever since he joined that Service Club he has been the one to solve all the problems mostly single-handedly - while having insults constantly thrown his way. At best, the others have served as a motivation for him to not quit.

The problem with baking cookies? Solved by him because he taught her that efforts will trump bad cooking.
Sure the story writing thing wasn't exactly solved by anyone, but he was the one that gave the most encouragement.
The Tennis match? Pretty much all Hachiman. But even when he won against all odds, he was the loser.
The Spam Mail incident? Hachiman. At best, Yukino only insulted everyone & Yui lost some respect among her peers were it not for the yaoi-girl spazzing out.
The Working-Student incident? Solved by Hachiman with help from his sister. Yet again Yukino was highly ineffective.

So it's starting to make me wonder just how effective this club was before Hachiman joined.

There is a key factor the show is trying to get across that you have hit on AHTL. Yukino was not effective before he showed up, but why is that? Because she herself has the same problems he does but can't identify with people so far removed from her. Her life is too different, like the teacher says, "She has the problem of being a have."

The reason she pushed Hikki to join the club wasn't just to help him. After all he doesn't like nice people, but the reason is not that he doesn't like nice people. Everyone likes nice people. It is that he wants to know what it is like to have someone who is only nice to him.

Point is Yukino is only there to fix one person, and it isn't their clients.

I know, but I haven't seen any sub groups with it out yet. I've been watching subs because of the delaycast and I really can't wait to see the next episode.

This show is hitting me right in the loner sensibilities ;_; Again, written very well, I think.

I can sense a double-tsundere-deconstruction going down later on, with the nice-girl tsundere and the cold-girl tsundere playing against Hachiman in the worst way. Poor guy can't believe that Yui is actually being nice to him for the sake of getting closer to him. If Yukino claims ownership over Hachiman, then he'll probably be way more receptive to her, and I can't say I look forward to that.

Hachiman's a pretty nice guy, but he needs Yui. But Yukino arguably needs Hachiman in the same way. Ugh... Welp, I guess I'll ruminate on this for another week, lol. Here's to hoping for a better turn of events.

Ouch. Poor Yui. Even tho Hachiman hates nice girls it makes me wonder if any of them cried like she did. We've seen flashbacks of other girls in his past (so far I've not seen any girls like Yui) but Yui is so genuine it hurt me watching that ending. Still was a good episode in my eyes because we got to also see Yukino come to an understanding about siblings and how they can be the closest stranger to you. Think it's the first time she has said something agreeable like that to Hachiman. Episode 6 has got me VERY curious now...

The show definitely has promise. It kind focuses more about being anti-social than romance for now, which is refreshing. I just hope this doesn't turn into a love triangle. I feel like it would be out of character and it would take away what this show has going for it. Hopefully stays on course.

eh I honestly think that Yui was being friends with HIkki because she pitied him even if she doesnt realize it. You never see Yui approach Hikki except times during when he is obviously severely isolated from the rest of the group and even then she only approaches when the rest of the populars are gone ( Ep.5 she only approaches Hikki until everyone else left). And also we know Hikki isnt a retard, he has 108 skills or whatever :P, I think after hearing the whole story Hikki can see that Yui is his friend out of pity even if she doesn't know it. so he decides to break this relationship before it hurt both of them.

Hmmm... That's an interesting take on it. I hadn't thought of it that way. You might be right.

I think a part of me wants to believe she actually likes him, but the more I re-watched their exchange, the more I felt she was friends with him because she felt like she "owed" him a debt of gratitude. So in a way, we see it the same way in that her friendship with him might be fake. I kinda hope not though.

Maybe she looks at him as some kind of hero... though that's probably a bit of a stretch, but she isn't the sharpest tool in the tool shed either.

This is quite possible and who knows she may be doing it because of pity but her reaction says either she doesn't realize it's because of pity or its because she sincerely cares about Hachiman. That's why I'm ready to see the next episode right now; especially, considering the title of the next episode and the sound bits at the end. Idk, I get the feeling from what I've seen it's because she sincerely cares and it's not for pity but future episodes will tell us for sure.

I don't think Yui is acting out of pity, but I also think Hikki's default position in any situation would be to push her away if he felt like she was getting too close. It makes sense for him to be defensive to a fault from what we've seen.

He doesn't mind Yukino since they're practically cut from the same cloth; he can trust that she'll stay distant of her own volition and not to get closer to him than he'd like. But Yui is definitely a threat from his point of view.

Imho.

eh even if Yui and Hikki get together i dont feel it could last well, they have both core different personalities. Hikki is the loner who would rather sit at the back of the school feel the breeze and eat sandwiches than have a discussion with another human being. On the flip side you have Yui who cares about what EVERYONE thinks of her. I mean my main problem is i cant see any reason for a girl like Yui to like a guy like Hikki and if the only reason is cause he saved her dog then that just feels like a debt of gratitude she has rather than a crush.
