I find it funny that they didn't dig a giant moat around the walls

not like they had anywhere else to go why not dig a giant molt so titans won't be able to walk in. given a few can jump like madman but that is a few.

They'd be in danger from titans while doing so though; and it falls in with the idea that for 100 years they thought the wall was all they needed. There was no reason to add extra defenses since there was no known threat to their safety.

Plus how would they dig it; it'd take an intense amount of manpower and it doesn't seem like a society that'd submit readily to conscription. Even the military is volunteer-based. And you'd have to dig and maintain a hugely deep moat.

I'm not even sure how they'd feed a moat that big. Do we even know the circumference of Wall Maria?

Don't they have wizards that can conjure up rainstorms? No wait, you're right, it'd be more realistic if they used all the tears they shed over those 100+ years to fill the moat.

I'm new to Titan and I have a question:

Why can't the inhabitants live underground to not be tormented by the Titans? At least until they find out how to get rid of them.
Why on earth would they do that? They lived carefree lives for 100 years behind the safety of the walls. Never worrying or caring about what the titans were doing outside, there was no "torment". You're suggesting they should have lived bleak existences underground popping outside to farm and hunt for food in terror instead of going about their normal lives with massive walls protecting them? lol wut?

It's only been 5 years since they discovered there was a colossal capable of breaking through the wall. You think they could have carved out a massive underground city capable of fitting all of humanity in those 5 years? It would be retarded to even try. That effort would be better spent reinforcing the walls with defenses and coming up with a weapon to combat the titans. A weapon they now have. His name is Eren Jaeger.

I'm pretty sure it had it in the manga somewhere but this is just hypothetical. The idea of if I was king of that land I want my citizens to be safe than regurgitated ball of goo.

So they dig in the dark when titans are less active and the risk and rewards are weighed.

It is also a form of work, a dangerous form of work. Work for food maybe better than average people.

Just dig dig dig, and when the first dig site is deep enough dig back into the city and you have an established form of transport. or start from the inside to outside.

I get the flaw is that 100 years of peace really does play the primary role, but I am the audience and that is how i would approach the problem.

edit: you don't have to fill the moat or lay a bed of spikes

Not filling the moat would defeat the purpose of the moat. Otherwise all you're doing is digging away the ground to make the wall taller when everyone thought it was more than tall enough already. And potentially threatening the stability of said wall from erosion over the decades. Plus stakes are only good against the first wave of titans, and it's not enough to kill them anyway; they just pile up in a mass and eventually overwhelm whatever barrier there is.

And working at that scale is already impractical; doing it at night would be crazy. Plus it takes days to travel any significant distance outside the walls; they'd have to set up work camps outside the walls and defend them.

Edit: The only thing this tells me is that they didn't introduce the world well enough before destroying it.

Just an idea.

The dyson sphere is impractical.

Since gates are the only weak point to begin with I could imagine them digging really deep holes outside each one and adding drawbridges for access. That could be an interesting way for them to show off some big engineering mechanisms.

And I also wonder why they haven't created machines to help take down titans beyond cannons.

You could use the basic concept of a ballista except use it to fire huge blades and slice a titan right in half before executing it in person (or lop off it's legs). They'd still be impractical, but military engineers love building these things.

So I was right...the recap episode counts as episode 13.5 rather than 14.

At least we saw a preview for episode 14.

Don't think too hard about this series. If I do I'll hate it and drop it. Titans appearing out of nothing is just wrong on SO MANY LEVELS that I'm not worried about anything simpler than that... But it is fun so I am just going to watch it and assume that in this world, things are just the way they are... otherwise this story is just too dumb for words.

The plot mechanics maybe; even as a manga reader there's so much still left unsaid that it's hard to know if it's all thought out or just superficial. But the society and way of life that's been crafted can withstand a fair amount of rigor.

Not the physics unfortunately... of either the gear or the titans or the walls or any of that... so I try not to think about it...
