Even if it wasn't confirmed that Hanji Zoe is a boy or a girl, she's obviously a girl!

I really don't understand this whole "Hange isn't a woman" meme.

The Japanese language doesn't require gendered pronouns, so the fact that she hasn't been referred to with a gendered pronoun doesn't mean anything - neither has Levi or Erwin, and nobody's calling them 'it'. I'm legitimately confused as to how anyone even came to the conclusion that a character with eyelashes, breasts and long hair, who has been depicted in a skirt and is called Zoe was NOT a woman (though i guess Isayama's sometimes-questionable art was the cause). I simply don't see how she's any more masculine than Sasha, Ymir, Mikasa the queen of abs, or, honestly, any woman in this show except for Krista. The only androgynous thing about her is, IMHO, being voiced by Romi Park, and that came along after the fact.

Papermoon on tumblr did a very good takedown of the whole situation over several posts, this is only one of them, but I recommend checking it out: http://papermoon2.tumblr.com/post/52716450297/five-eta-four-sorry-of-the-main-characters

Shucks. Oh well. Nanabe was news to me though.

And the English language really needs a non-gender-specific pronoun. It's kind of awkward as-is.

It does. It is "one", as in "One does not do that". People don't use it because it is too formal and awkward for casual conversations, but it does exist.

Ooo, good point. I didn't think of that. It can't be used as a personal pronoun though, which makes the phrasing tricky. But I'm glad you mentioned it; for some reason I like collecting snippets of information like that in my brain.

Thanks!

You're welcome. I've studied quite a few languages. It's a bit of a hobby. :)

BTW, personal pronouns can be funny across many languages. Take Italian for instance. Except for emphasis, you generally don't bother with pronouns. If you said "sogna", then you'd know he or she or it dreams. Context tells you who or what is doing the action, just like Japanese.

Context is always key. So, it can be misleading to make assumptions solely because someone's gender hasn't been explicitly stated. In a number of languages, it isn't necessary.

So I was right...

Krista could have abs underneath all that goddess, though. You never know. Maybe she's secretly the manliest girl in the whole show but can't reveal that fact because it would tarnish her godlike visage.

Maybe, she's like Stella from Arakawa Under the Bridge

I thought the issue behind Hanji's sex was the fact that neither the manga author or anime director have made any confirmations when asked about it.

Fun fact, but Ymir is voiced by Saki Fujita - who is also the voice behind Hatsune Miku.

They (up-above) were talking about about non-specific gender pronouns. I just happened to have made this awhile back just posted for the small amount of relevance and my 2 points haha.
