Flannery O'Conner once said something to the effect of saying that a good artist has themes in their work because their beliefs, thoughts and values seep into the work naturally. I'm a big proponent of that. I think a good artist always seeks to tell a story above all, and their themes are just a reflection of the artist in the work. Trying to force themes into a story almost always seems heavy handed and fake.

That reminds me of the part in Bakuman when they talked about mangakas who told the story they wanted to tell (and got lucky), compared to those who sat back and intentionally designed one for a target audience (and also got lucky).

It's late though, I don't remember the specifics from that chapter/episode.

Probably. It's not a terribly complete list for AoT either, all things considered.

Some themes seep in naturally, but I know that some of the better authors/artists insert themes are intentionally into their works. They do it because if it is done well, it improves the work. Good authors/artists are professions. This is their craft and they work at it. If the theme feels heavy handed and fake, well they haven't done their job very well.

I agree. I guess maybe a better way of putting it would be to say that, for the best of the best, the themes seep in naturally and the true mastery comes in their ability to naturally amplify and expand on that theme and crystallize it within the context of the story. It's sort of like finding a diamond bond in a rock and how a master artisan can perfectly chip away at the rock until the diamond is revealed in its full beauty (disclaimer: I think I remember learning that's how diamonds are revealed, but if not, just insert the correct gemstone).

I found this funny AMV of AoT. Well, a few of them, if anyone wants to take a gander:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKXRKZUaAR0 ~Nichijou OP (AoT Edition)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idypv3Owy0I ~ Same thing as above, just with actual anime scenes instead.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0Oe1Ar5I2M ~ AoT OP 2 (Nichijou Edition)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIAomsC6rH4 ~ Attack on Nichijou

And that's about it. I'll stop before I overload and explode. This describes my thoughts at the moment:

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this but I wanted to incorporate AoT into Halloween so pumpkin Eren happened. I made the stencil on MS Paint using a screenshot from the show. It could be better but I'm really excited about the final product. Plus it will be fun to see if anyone out tonight gets the reference. :)

Posting from Female Anime Fans' View on Perfect Anime Women due to my Y chromosome.

There's a lot of talk about Mikasa there I wanted to weigh in on though, without tangenting the other thread.

Insomnist wrote:

Mikasa's a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, I wouldn't disagree with anything anyone's said about her here objectively. On the other, I don't particularly like that about her character, so it's possible I've invented a couple extra layers for her inside my own head.

The base idea is that every action is always taken out of personal interest. Given an array of options, every person will choose the available one that best suits their interests that they feel they can live with, from the most altruistic to the most pathological.

When you apply this to Mikasa, I don't see a 1-dimensional psychotic yandere. I see a young woman who had a relatively idyllic life up until the moment her parents were cut to pieces in front of her eyes as a child, and who has never dealt with that pain.

From that moment, I think she's been adding layer upon layer of armor around her true self; not only to protect herself from future pain, but to protect the part of her that's still hurting. She's like the world's most tragic caterpillar inside a cocoon.

Immediately after the trauma that destroyed her trust in humanity, though, Eren gave her a place to stand; the eye of her mental hurricane, if you will. In the moment she believed there was not a single human being she could trust, Eren proved trustworthy.

Mikasa's devotion to Eren isn't mindless, it's almost more of a dissociative disorder. She tests her world through his eyes because she won't trust her own. If someone is good to Eren, then she can trust them. But she needs that mental disassociation.

Her being crazy about Eren, then, becomes something deeper. She's protecting him because she's using him. Not in a bad way, we use each other all the time. But by using Eren she's protecting herself, and the broken and damaged little girl inside of her soul that bears all the wounds she saw inflicted on her parents that she has never healed. As long as Eren exists, and she can weigh her world with him as the scales, she doesn't have to go back to that place and deal with those wounds.

Now, this is when things get REALLY interesting:

This makes Mikasa a walking-talking allegory for the entire series. The human race is in its own defensive cocoon being assailed by titans, just as Mikasa is being assailed by her buried pain. And her effectiveness at combating the former only accentuates her inability to deal with the latter. Except Mikasa is still in her 100 years of peace, the layers of her cocoon have not yet been broken; and in both instances, as the walls begin to fall, we have to see whether the caterpillar will die or be transformed.

Granted, none of this has been acted on in the series (or the manga, so far). But I also don't think it's that great of a leap to make intuitively, and it's greatly increased my appreciation for her as a character. Especially how she mirrors the series as a whole.

It's not just that she's scarred and cleaved to Eren, I truly believe she is a fully-realized character who symbolizes something both desperate and painful within the Attack on Titan world. And I'll be interested to see if that's acted on moving forward.

Anyway, that's my two cents on Mikasa's character depth.

Is it bad I like Abridg'd Comedy's version better? I just love what they did with Eren's mom in it. But the other one is TFS so I'll probably watch both
