Does anyone know or have any theories on why flip phones tend to be so prevalent in anime? In recent years the smartphone has really taken off and it seems like the nickname for flip phones these days is the "Infidelity Phone" because of the extra layer of security said phones give.

With the above in mind, why don't they portray characters as having more modern phones in most anime?

I was wondering this as well. Wasn't sure if they were just more popular in japan or if smart phones are out of reach of the teenagers that are the focus of most anime.

Even in space brothers which takes place in 2022, some of the people have flip phones.

"Noblesse Oblige"

Ya pretty sure the Seleção phone is anything but inferior. You'd definitely feel safe with it though.....or would you?

For relevance to the question, they are used so they can continue doing the scene where a character finishes looking at his phone closes his eyes and flips it closed. Clearly not the prevailing reason behind the use of flip phones, but still worth mentioning.

It was when smartphones started hitting it big.
The new animes that season had flip phones still.
Even animes today have flip phones.

I wonder why too.

My assumption is because of the culture in Japan. While many people in north america use smart phones now a days there is still a huge demographic in japan that finds flip phones attractive. Since the animation is done by Japanese companies (duh) I would assume that they are just animating based off the culture they know.

I immediately got this Mirai Nikki and the more recent Devil Survivor 2 vibe when I clicked this thread.

...I personally prefer flip-phones, but they have to be the skinny ones (Like the Sanyo Katana), not the fat ones (like the LG Lotus.)

In addition to anime producers using the culture they know as a reference, I'd also guess that the fact that many anime are produced from manga adds a certain amount of inertia. Probably takes a couple of years for a manga to become popular enough to get selected for an anime, then it has to be planned and produced.

It is interesting how accelerating technology trends are making media become dated more and more quickly. Flip phones were dominant just a handful of years ago.

This series is one of the reasons why I thought their might be an age gap. Several of the older people in that anime did have non-flip type smart phones.

lol i use a flip phone. anyway i think it's alot of the anime characters you see with flip phones don't tend to live extravagantly and i see smart phones as a luxury so the two don't really match up. but honestly i think in more recent animes there is a decent balance between the two. and as i've said as a fellow flip phone user it doesn't really bother me ^_^
