I really don't see why this is so hard to understand. A smartphone is not defined as a black brick with a giant touch screen. A lot of those flip phones ARE smart phones.

Its the market trends. Smart phones may be big in the US, but in other countries that may not be the case. Even in the US i know a lot of people who still use flip phones, as they only use the phone function. Remember when you only had to charge your phone every couple of days?? now you need to make sure you travel with a charger so that your phone doesnt die after half a day.

Best flip phone ever in anime, Muromi-san's pink clamshell phone!

I'm suprised no one mentioned that Sorata in Sakurasou has a phone that looks a lot like it's supposed to be an android based phone

I dunno why they're there, but I'm REALLY wanting to go back to a flip phone. There's something so satisfying about them that I just can't describe.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but my current phone is a touchscreen smartphone, and I just can't help but wish I had a flip phone again. There's no need for screen protectors or cases, the whole phone is both! Someone needs to start coming up with flip smartphones in the US... Or at least find a way to make them more marketable.

I have no damn clue. All I know is our favorite Japanese people love flip phones because they can stylize it with keychains and all that fun stuff. It really annoys me though.

Why didn't you get a flip phone then? Personally, I like the phones that slide more than the ones that flip. I have a Nokia Lumia 920, but oddly enough I only use it to call or surf the web (and I like messing with the settings); I ratherly text, I dislike texting - I only do it for school or other important matters.

Now back on topic. I can't give a good answer as to why there are more flip phones in anime than any other type, but I think what someone said earlier is a good assumption. The assumption that in being a different country and culture, what they prefer to use will be different from, say, what we do. Not everyone uses smartphones and whatnot (I don't even know what a smartphone is; shows how much I know :P). I know people who still use phones from the early 2000's.

Flip phones in Japan and Korea are popular. I have a korean phone: the lollipop. It is designed to be very cute in terms of the way it looks physically but also its virtual content. Many korean flip phones are like this, A huge feature they all have are LED lights on the front. It is the trend there, but here in North America we don't favor those phones, and phone companies don't carry them, except for the phone I have, which is only provided by one phone company.

220 LED lights. Wow. Wait, what phone company provides them in North America?

EDIT: Nevermind, is it T-Mobile? Right?

Wind mobile. I live in Canada though, so I don't know if Wind is in the U.S. Or if you're even in the U.S. But yes, T-mobile also has it, and they have it in pink & blue & black. Wind only has blue & black.

Nyarko also has a smart brick.

If I knew how to take a screen cap from an ep after pausing it I'd put up the shot at 7:57 of ep ,1 ssn 2.

It makes me wonder if that isn't the real reason Apple put a strap connector on the back of the 5th generation iPod Touch; test marketing to see if it made it more popular in Japan, with implementation on the iPhone to follow if it did.
