Not sure how I feel about "Maoyu" (Spoilers)

So I watched Maoyu in its entirety and I really don't get what happened. Humans and Demons are at war cuz they hate each other, and the Demon King wants to bring an end to the war and usher in peace. Okay, I get that. But then it takes a bizarre turn towards the end. The Merchants start buying wheat to make prices go up so they can... make money? It was such a moving and compelling strategy that I forgot why they did it. Something about the war and trading with demons. Then Demon King gets taken over and Hero goes to kick her ass. No wait, he says some things and she comes back on her own. Um... Honestly, I don't know what it was all for.

To me, the anime seemed like it cared more for the journey than the actual end of the journey. Almost like going on an adventure for the sake of adventuring. The war is still raging towards the end, humans and demons mostly hate each other, and we're not told if they actually started trading together. Then the thing with the dual currency which I kinda get but they don't elaborate too much on.

This anime is like a medieval Ghost in the Shell with magic and demons instead of cyborgs and guns. Except Ghost in the Shell had a lot of action along side all the talking and politics while Maoyu is just straight up talking. a LOT of talking. That's all that happens here. We don't really get to see anything. We don't get to see how strong the Hero is, we're just constantly told how strong he is. Seriously, it mentioned repeatedly how strong he is, probably so we don't forget it. We never get to see his strength and skill in action, we just gotta take the show's word for it. In Ghost in the Shell, we weren't told that Matoko can kick serious ass we're shown it. In spades. We see Hero use teleport magic and some offensive magic which looks impressive but it can never be appreciated fully because its not used against enemies.

I'm not against anime like this. Like I said, it seems to be like Ghost in the Shell, which I really like, even if I never really understood fully what was happening. But even in that comparison, Maoyu really seemed to be an odd ball, electing to just tell us everything instead of showing. Do I like this anime? Honestly, no. I stayed on and watched the full 12 episodes, but I didn't leave feeling satisfied or happy. I felt confused. There's no clear resolution and I can't help but not really care about the characters. Sure, we see some things like the Maid girls' past and the Knight's unrequited love, but the anime doesn't let us really connect with these characters. First off, no one has a name here. Everyone is referred to by title, which I found odd. Secondly, most of the time the focus isn't on the characters themselves but on what they're doing or some event or on politics. Its clear that this anime doesn't care about the characters as much as it does its own message. Which is what? War is bad? The world isn't black and white, but gray? Never judge someone on what they are but who they are? Believe in yourself, even if you're alone? Don't we have enough anime that try to tell these messages? The difference is that if there is a message, most anime would only have maybe one or two, balancing the time spent between character development and how the message pertains to them. But Maoyu seems like it wants to say everything at once, but its not sure how to do it. And I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way. Maoyu used to be popular on Crunchyroll, but right now its not on the popular category (at least not on my PS3).

What do you guys think? Do you agree with me? Disagree? Maybe there's something that I'm clearly missing that would make this anime awesome?

Well they arent really at war because they hate eachother, the masses are made to hate eachother because the war ultimately benifits those ontop who have the power to control the masses. Thats the very basic premise of even the first episode, maybe you need to rewatch it? There is alot of talking, but its not monogatari style of 99% speach, spice and wolf is similar but I believe a slightly lower level?

I'm aware that the war is waged from some deal between the higher ups of both races, but as far as everyone else is concerned its because of hate, mostly. Ultimately, it ends up being the same anyway. The real reason for the war doesn't really change what I said earlier. And I never watched those two anime you mentioned so I can't compare them, but it sure seems like 99%. All I can really say is if they decide to continue it I definitely won't watch it.

If the war ends... countries that were given supply would stop receiving them.
So, before the war ends... these country must have a way to support their own economic....

And yeah, the war initially started because of hatred (racism between human and demon). But throughout the story you learn from the Hero's adventure that there can be peace between the 2 races...
Not everyone is a racist towards the other races... So there is a way to stop the war if the 2 races understand each other...

That is the basis of the whole story... no?

Basically you were given a 12 episode anime with which a cliff hanger ending arose (all too common). Now you are forced to write an essay because you are in somewhat discontent with the series…

Yup that is your generic anime. Neither shitty nor great most would say good anime but in realty it was simply alright.

You're right +1

It was kinda interesting though I thought there would be more action. It reminded me of Ookami to Koushinryou. A lot of dialog.

both are about economics the micro economics simply had more of a relationship building between the two characters while macro economics focused on too many relationship building for such a short time

An anime like this needs more then a few seasons to flesh everything out but I think they did it nicely for 1 season.

I don't know. I was really looking forward to it. then found myself losing interest and not following it from about ep 4 or 5 on. Many anime go this way for me. for some of them, at some point. when I'm looking for something on which to waste the next 20 minutes of my life on, I can't even be bothered to click on the link. Sorry but Mayou is one of those.

The problem was it's a 26 episode series being told in 12 episodes by someone with ADD.

Oddly enough, thats pretty much exactly how I felt after the last episode.

It felt too rushed to me, but it had the potential to be really good instead of average. I got somewhat excited early on before it aired because of the comparisons to Spice and Wolf and the economic themes involved. But it was nowhere near as good as S&W if you ask me.

Lawrence and Holo > Hero and Demon King

Dont get me wrong, the animation was nice and overall I didnt dislike the series, but a 24-25 episode first season would have done it greater justice.
