The first 10 minutes was awful. Complete visual mess with no rhyme or reason. It was like someone let Michael Bay near Tron ( MOAR LASERS! SHOOT LASERS IN EVERY DIRECTION ). The latter half of the episode redeemed it however. Hopefully the show can stay away from anymore space raves.

Well considering the plot is about him living on earth amongst people with ancient technology, i doubt he will fight other people with lasers.

Yeah, the first half of the episode was too flashy and not really interesting, just information thrown straight at you, but I did love the second half. It looks to be a great anime.

how is the first half confusing?

humanity is fighting aliens in order to keep the 400million people alive they conduct operation via a worm hole. protagonist fights aliens, aliens kinda won humans retreat.

protagonist is unable to retreat gets knocked off course while escaping of the worm hole and is sent to a different space time

the setting is soooooooooooooo classic, the only real complaint should be why it took 10 minutes to SETUP the anime, and even then the first 10 minutes is full of pew pew pew

Maybe confusing isn't the right word.

Stupid perhaps?

Interesting to read the comments comparing the first 10 minutes to the last 10 minutes. I still LOL when I remember him tapping her ass with the laser gun. Priceless.

well that escalated quickly lol hasn't it only appeared for 15 minutes of the show? it really hasn't done anything...yet

I've yet to find a small pointless animal companion anything but annoying or completely irrelevant to the show it is in. I doubt this one will break that trend.

Not even Kyuuby?

Never watched Naruto if that is the Kyuubi you are referring to so can't really comment.

I think the first half is there not just to give background but as a contrast to the world the probable MC ends up in. It's all flashy and high-tech, and the MC is skilled and kind of bored with mission after mission (and likewise we don't find it all that interesting (though personally I found it pretty and mesmerizing)). Then thump...a stinky low-tech situation, which I think the MC and the we the audience will find interesting in some way or another.

I agree with this. They were just trying to give an idea of how different the MC's world is compared to earth. And since we're all sitting here talking about the two halves like they come from two different shows, I think the writers succeeded very well in setting up the contrast.

Well, the first 10 minutes served to define his character traits, personality and background. From the fighting scenes and preparation for them we have established that he is:

Regimented and accustomed to that: He woke up from the norm of stasis, being directed in his next actions by an AI system, and he went along with it, unresisting.

Hard-working, not a screw-off: He was going to be able to be put in regular society (and be allowed to reproduce) as a reward for his efforts (which he expressed doubts of being able to adapt to) of approximately 16 years of service. Which also implies they start getting trained into military life very early, because he can't be more than in his early twenties.

Follows rules, but not blindly. He is accepting of decisions from superiors. He had to abandon some comrades during retreat when there was nothing that could be done about it. And he protested his officer's decision of self-sacrifice, but he realized that it was a necessary military decision to be able to fight another day.

He is valiant and brave. In the face of danger, he took on some pretty stiff odds alone to provide cover for the rest to retreat. You can tell he didn't really want to, but felt he had to because it was the right thing and his duty.

So we find out that he is someone we like as a character (at least I do), and want to continue watching see him succeed, and of course, get the girl eventually.

Should it have taken 10 minutes to relate all of that? Perhaps not. But somehow summarizing all that into simple narrative form would likely not be as impactful on the watcher to viscerally empathize with his character going through those events telling the story visually, not nearly as soon as just dumping him and not knowing that he is a good person, albeit with completely different background life experiences as the earth crew. It's possible that this show will be show glimpses similar to FMP's Soske and Kaname all over again, including the humor inherent with the "Stranger in a Strange Land" situation.

Plus, that "enemy" in the beginning wasn't actually defeated, so it is still out there somewhere. Maybe it won't ever approach earth, but I could see it happen way later in a second or third season after he becomes accustomed to his new life. He has a lot of catching up to do to interact socially with the current people though, to establish himself in their group.

Episode 2

It spoke!

The OP song is okay I guess, wasn't too special or anything though. The first half was indeed more of an info dump. The part with the fish kinda cracked me up though; it actually looked kinda disgusting although it might of tasted good?

The second half's much better when Red goes all badass. Oh I enjoyed although I'm more curious about the origin of Chamber's weapon. It seems to be some sort of evaporating laser.
