The biggest selling point was the temporal rift created and he is set else where, this is the key point where the focus should be.
At this instant of time the anime (ep 1) has shown two different worlds, even computer said you are allowed to eat and have sex. It really tells you how much humanity is on the decline (pun intended) and how humanity is regulated.

I agree with this. They were just trying to give an idea of how different the MC's world is compared to earth. And since we're all sitting here talking about the two halves like they come from two different shows, I think the writers succeeded very well in setting up the contrast.

It's not necessarily the contrast most people mind, it's the seizure inducing action sequences coupled with heavy and fairly superfluous dialog. A lot of the explaining about the world the MC comes from came during the calm exit of cold sleep with the banter between himself and his on board AI(?). I understand that the point trying to be made here humanity is in a dire situation and that was what that part of the show was meant to portray, but with so many close up laser-blasts-everywhere action just looks messy. Like i said before if much of that action took place at a relative distance so you could get a better idea of the scale of the battle I wouldn't have minded a few "busy" close ups so much.

Well I wasn't saying the first half was great, just that it did serve its purpose. I think we can all agree that they could have cut the pew pew in half and the same message would come across.

I don't know, the first half is a mess both visually and from a story perspective. Although one lets the other down too. The viewer has fark and all investment or attachment to anyone or thing. There's no suspense since our proxy in the fight, the main character, is pretty emotionless to start with and we don't know anyone else involved in the battle. We haven't even really seen or spent any time in the thing they're fighting for ( Avalon ). So the battle itself is meaningless aside from just being an assault of visual noise.

Because it was such a visual mess though, it loses all impact. There's no drama or sense of loss in watching a laser rave with neon space mollusks. Especially when everything everyone is doing seems pointless. 98% of the lasers are being fired in random directions at nothing and there's no connecting shots to help establish that they're even really hitting anything. When our trusty hero flips out and goes super raver seiyen we get repeated close ups of him shooting lasers in literally every direction at the same time over and over. But no real impact shots to show that he's doing anything but putting on light show.

Nevermind the terrible techno babble. I'll admit once they said "quantum dimensional nuclear bomb" I yelled "WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY" at the screen.

They should have spent the first half of ep 1 setting up that battle sequence so it had meaning and kept the perspective from his point of view until ep 2. Instead of suddenly changing to a completely different channel midway through to The Adventure's o Squirrel Girl & Friends.

To be fair though I'd much rather watch that show than the former. Everything you point out is exactly the reason I almost always find mecha type anime insufferable. The "fish out of water" high tech and low tech contrast of the second half I can certainly see myself enjoying(at least so far), mecha or no mecha.

True. Hell, they could have started with The Adventures of Squirrel Girl & Friends and just shown the battle in flashbacks.

This show is pretty good so far imo. Sure, some of the info dump might be a bit bothersome to watch but there's this mysterious atmosphere I'm getting with the way it's being presented based on the mecha backgrounds. I think it's more than just about robots fighting in the atmosphere or more than the typical space/aerial warfare.

I am definitely looking forward to this. Shame it's only 12 episodes but so far, I am impressed. Oh and the anime visuals are glorious.

I will be following this show all the way through for this season and reviewing it once it's completed airing.

It's like they took the Love Live characters and added an extra helping of glossy shine to make Amy.

Gonna be a tough call if this, or Attack on Titan, will be the number one for Spring. Still too early to say. If it wasn't for Oreimo being season 2, i would list that as well, but i'm going off first seasons only.
