You realize that 'Urobutcher' the main writer for Gargantia wrote Psycho-Pass too right. Obviously it read their hues LOL Just kidding.

Seriously, it identified their ships and they have enough traces on them from their ships to identify the individuals. Chamber has a highly advanced Friend of Foe identification system.

The explanation that comes to me first is that Chamber was both dredged up by the same salvage crew, and spent some time in the Gargantia fleet. Chamber's sensors are obviously quite advanced, so he(?) could easily have a record of every member of the Gargantia fleet and therefore be able to scan and distinguish them from the pirates who he is "seeing" for the first time. Of course it's sci-fi, so there are lots of possible explanations.

Pretty much agree with those posted above. There must be some way Chamber "tagged" the members of Gargantia so it would know who and what to target. Plus, Chamber told Ledo to get in closer to the pirate fleet. I don't remember what he said after that but I'm guessing it was for the "friend or foe" thing to kick in. It will be interesting to see Amy's reaction to what happened and how she will communicate with Ledo because I'm sure everyone else is going to shun or be very afraid of him (I could be wrong though).

A lot of people will be frightened, some will even panic. However, at that point they should realize that the power difference is so extreme that there is nothing they can do about him. And that the only reason that they still live is that he allowed it. Even if they killed the pilot, the autonomous robot could destroy their entire fleet with ease.

Be interesting to see how irrational their fear makes them.

Chamber used space magic to do it.

It's safe to assume that Chamber has been sitting in the storage bay for a time, and that it has tagged everyone on the salvage crew as a potential non-threat ...at least I think for myself that it's a safe assumption. So with all the crew on the salvage ship tagged as friendlies, it was easy for the death rays to poof all the pirates.

Locard's exchange principle, when you touch something it leaves something behind. It being able to target just the pirates is easily explained away in multiple ways but this is probably the best way to do it.

Yeah I totally agree with this line of thinking, they may be enemies but the pirate captain asks Bellows to leave Gargantia and join them. If they really wanted her skills and were evil that no one would cry over if annihilated they wouldn't be asking. They aren't executing anyone they just threaten sexual assault and skirmish with the ships and crew that were there for defense.

It's clear that the pirate fleet is large (only 3 ships broke away and attacked) and probably big enough to do serious damage to Gargantia but excessive loss of life for either sides is an unacceptable risk in a Earth with limited human and material resources.

Gotta disagree with this one. Implied threat of rape towards one of your crew and stating "for your own good, I'd think twice about refusing" isn't what I would normally call "asking." On top of that it certainly looked like the ship escorting Bellows ship was destroyed and some of the crew killed. So that is at least 2-4 dead and the loss of one, albeit small, ship in the Gargantia fleet. That is evil enough in my book.

Dead Pirates = Better World

That and now Bellows can salvage the pirates ships.

Yea, have to agree. Threatening someone to join your group by assaulting a woman doesn't pass as something to overlook nor bombing one of their boats and when both sides are shooting at each other that makes all bets off when it comes to living or dieing. The right decision was made the question is will the Gargantia crew be able to process the situation correctly of how easily Ledo and Chamber dealt with the pirates. Also, even though they were defending themselves you now know there will be retaliation by the pirates at some point in the future. So, it will be interesting to see what happens.

So why don't they just kill everyone then? Even Amy just calls them "a pain in the neck" sentry ships getting destroyed in the attack along with the guards is something completely different than killing what amounts to a civilian crew and salvage operation and there is a distinction made.

Given drones today can already pick out friendly vehicles and troops by the shape of their gear from a long distance its pretty reasonable to expect super duper space mega tech would be able to do that. Though why a space combat fighter belonging to a purely spacefaring nation works perfectly in atmosphere, and can survive falling through it, then being submerged so much is a bit of a better question

Bellows apparently has a good reputation in regards to her profession. Her skills *are* valuable. On the other hand when a pirate makes a "join us or else" type threat right after killing off the escort ship I don't think they mean a little roughing up. I think it is more along the lines of permanently depriving Gargantia of her skills one way or another.

Taking Amy's casual off the cuff comment about pirates the night before as an insight to her full feelings towards them is kind of reaching. I would be guided much more by the crews general reaction, including Amy's, that seemed like this was a life threatening and dangerous situation.

It was in a war, and the savages said there was barely a scratch on it. What kind of material is the robot made of?! I love this anime so far
