So why don't they just kill everyone then? Even Amy just calls them "a pain in the neck" sentry ships getting destroyed in the attack along with the guards is something completely different than killing what amounts to a civilian crew and salvage operation and there is a distinction made.

Bellows apparently has a good reputation in regards to her profession. Her skills *are* valuable. On the other hand when a pirate makes a "join us or else" type threat right after killing off the escort ship I don't think they mean a little roughing up. I think it is more along the lines of permanently depriving Gargantia of her skills one way or another.

Taking Amy's casual off the cuff comment about pirates the night before as an insight to her full feelings towards them is kind of reaching. I would be guided much more by the crews general reaction, including Amy's, that seemed like this was a life threatening and dangerous situation.

You are missing the big picture here. The pirates are well known and Bellows comments to just take what you came for and leave. If these pirates made a habit of killing and destroying everything they capture would she even make that comment.

It is highly probable that while encounters with them are deadly that they are not ruthless on purpose so as to not spark a war with all other fleets to rid themselves of the pirate problem. Likewise Gargantia could certainly fend them off were they in a better position to and the pirates would likely retreat which I'm sure has occurred before. But Ledo decimated not only the ships but all of the crew as well. If anything would spark a open conflict that neither side wants that would be it.

You seem to be assuming facts not in evidence. Like there is some sort of unwritten code of behavior which has not been shown or stated to exist. What we have seen so far is that the pirates killed off her escort, and threatened to rape one of her crew and cause her physical harm unless she did what they wanted. If that isn't ruthless on purpose I have to wonder what qualifies.

Also saying something like "just take what you want and leave" is something that has been said by victims of muggings, bank robberies, and any other number of crimes. Its basically a statement of desperation in the hopes that if you make it clear you won't offer any resistance the thieves won't hurt anybody. It has no significance beyond that.

Picking apart my words and still failing to grasp my point. Conjecture is conjecture I'm offering an alternative theory to yours which is just as much theory as everyone is eradicated before any of those threats are acted on.

imo, best anime for this season. It kind of reminds me of the movie Water World starring Kevin Costner. You kids wouldn't know what I'm talking about.

i forgot if I commented on this thread yet... But oh well! I'll just say that this show has been a real nice surprise for me! I love the visuals and the 2 main characters (so far). Easily my favorite show of this season! Love the ED song too! ^__^
