Sorry if this is a double, I did search before posting.

So what do you think about Video games based on movies? Is it a good idea? Bad idea?
Do you think it's a good idea for marketing?
Have you ever bought any of your own? I did. I bought Terminator Salvation and some of The Lord of The Rings videogames.
I don't mean games like Doom where they have a movie based on the game. I mean where the movie comes first, then the game.

I played the Avatar video game for Wii and well, it sucks.
The camera is messed up, every time I move the controller it attacks, and I can't tell who's who between me and my friend. Also, there is a bow feature and whoever pulls the bow first controls the camera.
My brother played terminator salvation and apparently the controls are confusing.
The only good game based on a movie IMO is The Lord of The Rings Two Towers and TLoTR: Return of the King. I loved the gamplay in both. Fellowship of the Ring was difficult as hell. I hardly got through the game. My friend had Ant Bully for Wii (we were 4th graders) and she never played it until last year, and we're 10th graders now. The game was way too difficult and the instructions were confusing. Not recommended for children with simple minds. Even I couldn't get through a level.

What are your thoughts?

It can be good, some movies could really suit a video game, but generally games based on movies are terrible. I mean really terrible.

Yeah, it boils down to that most of the time, video games based on movies (and tv series) are made with one purpose and that is squeezing a little bit of extra extra coin out of the title.
Several movies even have a video game budgeted into the production these days as several actors are also playing roles in the game.
There are a few games that were actually decent, or even good, but yeah... the most of them are terrible beyond words.

One of the rare gems for me was Enter the Matrix.
While the third movie was slightly disappointing to me, the game was actually a really good addition to the saga.
Also quite a few of the Star Wars games I find quite enjoyable.

Yep, but this is about the other way around, existing movies that have video games based on them.

Hm. I'm not very fond of movie-based games. Never bought or played too many of those. Here's a few that I remember...

Back to the Future and Back to the Future 2 & 3 for the NES. To put it short, I love the Back to the Future movies... The games... no.

Home Alone for the SNES is a bit infamous in the video game world. I did beat the game several times as a kid. I don't remember it being as bad as most people said it was, but I do remember how frustrating the enemies could be. Hit detection was off, if I remember correctly; the bosses in the game were especially frustrating because of this.

Toy Story for the SNES... Well, it wasn't that bad. Goals for completing certain levels were sometimes unclear and the controls were irritating in certain spots in the game. It seemed that the difficulty just jumped up whenever the game felt like it. I never did beat this game, not without cheating that is.

Lastly, there was a game that I really enjoyed when I was younger; it was the Addams Family for the SNES. I only rented the game (several times, and I did beat the game too), but I just found it to be fun and different. Lots of exploring to do and secrets to find. It was a difficult game, and hit detection... yeah... it was a problem here too. That didn't stop me from beating the game several times though.

I once read an article... Can't remember where... It was about the poor quality of a lot of movie based games. Seems that the film companies give the game developers a very small time frame to complete the game. Would be better without a strict deadline in order to put some creativity and satisfying gameplay into the game.

Video games based on movie may have some potential to be a fun game but always want the money.

For game movies, I played; it was Cars for the Nintendo DS when I was young. It was horrible.
