I'm not sure if there is a meaning to it or if it is just one of those themes anime has developed over time, I did a google and forum search and haven't been able to find an answer. Anyway my question is if there is a significance to school aged female characters tapping their toes right after putting on their shoes. I have seen it in more anime than I can count but the most recent I noticed where Spirited away and the world god only knows. Any ideas?

I would guess Chihiro did that because she shoved her foot in the shoe hurriedly and tapped just to make sure it was on correctly. When I was in Pre-k other kids did a variation of this. They didn't not know how to tie their shoes, so they would slide their feet in and out and then push their shoe or twist it around.

I just realized both characters I was referring to were named Chihiro, now I have to go back and watch every anime ever made with a character named Chihiro, maybe it's something only Chihiro's do. Lol

My assumption is that they tap their shoes when leaving the house to make sure their shoes are on tight. They probably tap both, but only one is shown. Just a theory.

Those shoes are either tied already and or just slip on. They give a light tap to push their shoe to the front. I do it especially when wearing dress shoes for interviews for example. I have ones you cannot tie so I tap them to make sure they are all the way to the front so the heel doesn't destroy my feet.

I still think it has to do with an old wives tale

i don't think it's related to any sort of folk tale. I do that toe-tapping thing when I wear slip ons. Though I can't remember if I did it before or after noticing it in Spirited Away first, lol.

I can't do that. It looks pretty hard.

I keep my shoes tied up and just slip them on and off and I do the toe tapping every now and then just to get my foot settled into the shoe completely and comfortably. Sometimes pulling my heel out and back in once or twice. I would imagine that is all it is.

Probably to make sure its on right or if their feet got bigger before they go out with a shoe that might be all crowded and uncomfortable at the tip of their shoe all day and not able to go home and simply change their shoes if they are running late.

(Most anime characters I've seen are usually running late from school from staying up too late from a good dream or nightmare and accidentally sleeping in or other reasons that might have to do with the main plot like learning how to control powers or having someone with powers in the household something like that..)

Thats just my theory though since I don't even know myself.
