dont compare America with iceland. Military of course would come first. Everything we do is for money for "OUR" country. Making new weapons of course, Paying people in the military and giving them good benefits, you better believe it. With out our military our country would already crumble from invaders and everything else. Educational system has nothing to do with military. People whine in how money goes to military but the dont realize that they're people who risking their lives for our protection. Weapons, bases, soilders, and equipments are not cheap. IT ensures our safety and also serves a sword for those who wish to mess with us. U.s.a is one of the country's most countries hate. also those who say america sucks... i would talk smack about your country but i dont really care since its probably jus as bad

No one believes that we are wasting money on troops and maintaining bases and such. That isn't the issue.

The issue is that our STANDING military is currently strong enough to fight world war III. Our navy alone is larger than England, France, China, Russia and Spain combined.

This is a wikipedia link, but you can follow the references at the bottom of the page for the source information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_warships_in_service_worldwide

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_level_of_military_equipment

Just look at the numbers. Things like aircraft carriers and attack helicopters are the most telling. China and russia still have huge numbers of main battle tanks, but things like that are moot point when you have 4 times the air power in aircraft, and 20 times the helicopter support.

On another note your remark is one used so often by people who do not have the skill to debate. What do we call your type, yes they call your type a grammar Naz

English is actually my second language. I've only been in America for about 9 years. And regarding this thread, there is nothing to be gained here. From your title alone, you just want people to agree with you and then you can bring down those who do not share the same opinion. What good does that do? I'm more interested in intellectual discourse where I can learn new things by listening to other people's points of view and having an open dialogue with them. From what I see here, you just want to shove your ideas down other people's throats and I'm not interested in being spoon fed biased opinions by someone who cannot even grasp the very basics of grammar. You want to fix a country? Make sure you are first capable of expressing yourself in a way that can be taken seriously.

On topic: I do agree that America is spending way too much money on it's military, but it has proved to be quite useful/helpful at times. I find it very disappointing that people who hate on the military only focus on the "warmongering" part. I hope you know that the military is also sent in as disaster relief to other countries. Having a strong, well-funded military has given America the ability to give aid to disaster stricken countries like Haiti and Japan -- absolutely commendable actions that people like yourself purposely overlook because it doesn't fit in with your own opinions.

Maybe you did not read the other post or you would have known I was part of the Air Force.
I know what the military entails in detail, at that I was based in Japan for 4 years.

What you don't understand is its not where most of the money goes.
Most of the money goes into Intel and lining the pockets of leaders in the pentagon.

Another chunk of it is used for military research, and war games.

Maybe about 6% is ever used is used on the soldiers or bases.

Do you really think we need to spend most of that money on Intel? (who are we paying that much money too, and for what.)

Understand the research, but America has been working on a sonar type weapon for some time now ( A weapon that turn people organs into mush, wiping out any underwater vehicles within a miles of the weapon. Including all marine life. ) 'Its been tested a few times killing a lot of wales and fish all in the name of military progress.

I would like to see some documentation to back up these claims. It doesn't matter to me if you were in the military, your word is still only your word.

The United States is about the only nation that has the largest voluntary military. As previously stated by another user would you rather have the PRC or the Russian Federation? What about the EU? I do not think the EU would like to play world police man, my justifications for such a claim, being 1) Because the United States has been a primary military provider in most European nations, socially it has affected the Europeans, allowing them to indulge themselves in the luxuries their budget surpluses have afforded them from not having to allocate as substantially a portion of the national budget to a standing army. Very much that it has alienated a generation of younger Europeans to war. Et 2) Bosnia in the 1990s, while genocide was occurring the EU turned a blind eye, and it was a US-lead NATO intervention that put an end to that little war.

If perhaps the United States withdraws from the international stage, rescinds NATO, disbands the UN, how much safer is the world? I'd say that Bosnia would be a microcosm as nations race to rearm themselves, sure the EU are still there to form cohesion amongst its member states. Though how relevant is that when it leaves the PRC unchallenged, so we have Chinese hegemony, and Japan, Taiwan and South Korea at the mercy of China and its allies. India and Pakistan might as well nuke one another and go to war, the Middle East would probably collapse into local warlord factional fighting after destroying Israel, with Saudi Arabia maintaining some form of control within its own borders as long as they have oil revenues, and Europe would ultimately collapse to ethnic tension or Russians. Why do I say ethnic tension? Go to any major European city and notice that minorities are crammed up in ghettos (and I'm not talking about Jewish ghettos either) of the city.

All ethics aside, the United States is keeping all the other nations in line.

How much out of every tax dollar spent do you think goes to are military budget?
47% goes into weapons and research. 6% more goes into paying for are soldiers and their needs.
so for ever dollar taken for tax 53% of it is given to the military.

Compare that to Iceland they take 1% of their tax payers money and put it into a military Budget.

Now lets look at the 2nd largest military China, how much more do you think we spend in are military than they do? we spend 5 times more than they do.
We spend over 40 times more than most other countries.

So next time you take a dollar out of your wallet just think how about half will be spent on weapons and bases made for killing people, and another few pennies on the people to use those weapons.

Do we Really need to spend so much money on are military?
Iceland spends 1% on there military, we spend 53%.
Makes you think where they spend the other 99% of there money? Education? Science? Health care? What are they crazy!?!

My god, the grammar.

Err I can just re-call someone arguing with me on cr about this conspiracy theory on how the military is keeping us from starving, being unemployed, and how the money we pour into the military is somehow stopping this whole country from tipping over. It just makes my blood boil.

Lets not focus on the conspiracy of where our money is going. Whats important to note is that the senate keeps on raising the amount of taxes that go to the military without checking if the military even wants it. we need to be spending less because we can already take out every one at once.we have enough tanks for every major city to have one. So many in fact that the military is trying to get rid of them. We are selling tanks cause we just don't know what to do with them, and the government doesn't check what its own departments need.

Who cares if someones lining their pockets because our senate will kill our country before our enemies get to it. Not that our enemies could get to destroying us because we could probably stop building weapons for ten years and still be ahead of everyone. Honestly probably only 2 or 3 years but you get my point.

I have more of a problem with the amount of money I pay so support those who sit around collecting checks because they are too lazy to go get a job. The military can take a portion of my pay check, the way I see it, the government will take my money anyways so it might as well be spent on something useful
