and then there is the fact that almost all of nations with the highest military budgets are our allies, and we would have them on our side if we actually needed to go to war.

not only that, but we send our kids to die in iraq for no reason. there was no justification. they did not attack us, Sadam Hussein was not involved with 9/11, and they didn't have WMD's. we invaded their country, caused around tens of thousands of civilian casualties, and then withdrew leaving their nation in ruin. i support the troops, but not aimless war. just look at Ukraine. Fox News has had on more than one guest who stated we should use military force. The situation in Ukraine has nothing to do with us, so it is so annoying when people want to use force over unrelated international politics.

i also find it ironic about how fox news and the right always complain about how much we spend on welfare and food stamps, meanwhile their support for the INSANE military budget costs us multiple times more. how about we feed our starving citizens and give our veterans the benefits they deserve before we start going around invading everything.

don't say F the military, say F the government for using our kids' lives as a tool for economic and political gain.

lol sry for that rant

The military budget used to fund quite a bit of our scientific research in this country. We've gotten really useful technologies too from them like the TCP/IP protocols that basically run the internet and the Global Positioning system (GPS). All that said, this doesn't happen as often as it should any more for the amount of money we spend. Basic research has been split from this money and basic research is becoming a casualty each budget cycle.

And i think someone earlier in the thread tried to say we don't spend that much on the military, but that's wrong. For the past 4-5 years it's been the number one line item on the federal budget (except for maybe this year, but it's still in that 700 billion - 800 billion dollar range if you don't pull BS accounting tricks like pulling out veterans affairs or homeland security stuff). And it doesn't have it's own explicit tax and assets stored up like Social security does.

Again, I'd like to see some of that money put to good use elsewhere. I like infrastructure and scientific research personally. Especially research. If we have problems that we need solutions too, like a cure for cancer as a hypothetical, it's not going to cure itself. We need to pay smart doctors and scientists to study it and try to find cures. That's what research is. studying problems and finding answers no one else has come up with yet. The free market doesn't support broad research, but rather research that can be monetized and turned into profit. There's no incentive for any private company to really support broad research like the government and universities here can.

All military should probably pack up and quit.
If there's another global conflict, China will win.

Hi there, I am active duty military. Interestingly enough, I am in the Coast Guard, who has by far has the lowest budget out of the armed forces.

I personally think that we do spend a lot on military in this country. Too much? That's debatable. We are a world superpower with global presence, so to be completely plain keeping our soldiers safe by giving them the best equipment we have available to us is favorable to our situation. You may sit and preach about how we spend too much money but when you are actually getting shot at or in something like my position where you are trying to save someone's life when shit has hit the fan, you are thankful for the equipment you are given to protect you

The worst part though is when our budgets get cut. When they do get cut, it hurts the people a lot more than anything else. Our benefits get slashed, and it's pretty detrimental as our income isn't really anything special to begin with.

I will say though that the military needs to budget itself better. This is a problem that is very well known within the military, people who aren't very good at allocating money are the people put in charge of doing just that, and the results often end with thousands if not millions of essentially wasted dollars. You also may not agree with why we wage war, and hell I know plenty of people who actually fought in the middle east who don't either. But we still carry out our orders because we are the military, and we are dependent on this equipment to ensure we carry out this mission and come back alive. Whether or not we should isn't up to us.

But rest assured, I am very thankful for every penny you guys put forth towards our efforts. I may not be infantry marching into Iraq, but as someone who has definitely felt their life on the line more than once, I am very grateful that we have the equipment that we have.

the title of this thread always makes me laugh... you'd think that a mod or whatever would have the decency to change the "are" to "our"

Nah! They (although not all, I hope) prefer to delete other comments that are less offensive and for whatever reason deemed to be "spam"; whatever their definition of spam is.

You can't have a decent statement that goes against military without getting a reply, "typical moron who doesn't appreciate the peace that his military do for them. Enjoy you freedom idiot."

Military is not always patriotic. Just like working in a regular office it also has its own politics.
Some people even use it as a stepping stool. Like the recruit 5 new members increases your rank system-- likely but not entirely the same way as the human pyramid scheme.

As a citizen, if the country's need me, as a last desperate resort, I will bare arms and fight. Of course, I might not likely survive. We have our own sets of values. That's one of mines.

As an individual, if push comes to shove, I'll either fight or flight. If a mother would do everything to save her child, why could I not do the same thing?

How much out of every tax dollar spent do you think goes to are military budget?
47% goes into weapons and research. 6% more goes into paying for are soldiers and their needs.
so for ever dollar taken for tax 53% of it is given to the military.

Compare that to Iceland they take 1% of their tax payers money and put it into a military Budget.

Now lets look at the 2nd largest military China, how much more do you think we spend in are military than they do? we spend 5 times more than they do.
We spend over 40 times more than most other countries.

So next time you take a dollar out of your wallet just think how about half will be spent on weapons and bases made for killing people, and another few pennies on the people to use those weapons.

Do we Really need to spend so much money on are military?
Iceland spends 1% on there military, we spend 53%.
Makes you think where they spend the other 99% of there money? Education? Science? Health care? What are they crazy!?!

Well, America also has a bigger navy than the next ten biggest navies combined. Of course their expenditures are huge.
Does the US need to cut back on spending for? Depends on where exactly and what exactly you are talking about.

If that navy goes though, expect your anime and manga prices to go up. I think that's the important issue here. Decrease in US military spending equals an increase in anime and mange prices.
