Anyone else get the feeling that Shoko's character was conceived by a 12-year old?

She's like the cool, quirky big sister type, and has got your back pretty much always. But she's also kinda dumb, so you'd never feel too intimidated. And then there's the "I'll show you how serious I am! *starts taking off clothes*" and also the *sees water spraying* "Let's run in there with my white shirt!"

I just get the feeling that if I was 12, I would be like "SHOKO, MY DREAM GIRL! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?" But now I just find her confusing.

Edit: I don't mean to be too critical of the show, I genuinely find her confusing. Perhaps I'll figure her out as the show goes on.

So I was starting to like this show again when it was getting all realistically grim, and then WTF? Hated. that. song.

At least the end was an improvement over sugary-song. Maybe even stomped all over it.

I hope.

It reminds me a lot of Guilty Crown, especially the whole school situation.

Edit:

Someone else thought that too, TV Tropes has it pegged as Code Geass meets Gundam SEED meets Guilty Crown.

So Gundam SEED would be another. Cited similarities:

Three major power blocs, two at war, and one neutral. An ordinary academy is attacked by a squad of elite soldiers for the purpose of stealing a Super Prototype mecha that's secretly being built beneath the facility. When enemy military units start wreaking havoc in the colony, the Ordinary High School Student protagonist manages to get inside first, and rip the incoming aggressors several new holes.

Another entry compared it to Puella Magi Madoka Magica with regards to L-elf's plotting:

Haruto is Madoka, L-Elf is Kyubey, and Shouko is Homura.

I wanted to say gundam seed but that is a setting, and I didn't want to take anything more away from the anime, lol.

I don't really think it's a whole lot like Gundam SEED... except for ripping off the entire first few episodes.

To be honest, this wasn't that bad an episode. Sure, there was the fair share of stupid stuff that's par for the course with this show such as such as Arus/not Earth Federation ready to recognize a nation of children and the turn on switch to the power being a big red button. But overall, there was some decent character drama. Not amazing, but decent and somewhat believable drama.

On top of that, Shouko is like Cagalli in being daughter of the neutral nation's leader. Also, with their appearing to be 4 more Valvraves, that makes it like Seed with the 5 prototype giant mechs being constructed in secret by the neutral nation.

Yeah, odd episode. Still watchable and fun but what was with it turning into High School Musical in the middle? And the Big Red Button...

And the end... strange show, stupid but fun!

Rip-off: 3. To exploit, swindle, cheat, defraud, or steal. It implies an action that was done to harm the victim.

This is a parody show, they are not ripping anyone off anymore than Nyarko-san does with it's references to numerous things.

Saki is my favorite. Kudos to her for taking charge. I could have done without the song to the world lol but it was a okay episode.

The song wasn't *that* bad... at least it was a full song, usually songs are just bits, and then they are off to finish the episode.

I generally like this show, and I'm definitely intrigued by where its going, however derivative it may be. As many have pointed out, it is borrowing a lot of plot elements from other shows. I'm not really willing to buy the "parody" argument. Humor aside, the show certainly seems to be earnest about its story. I would call it a pastiche, much like last season's Vividred Operation. That said, while a lot of plot points in the show are more than familiar to fans of mecha, it does them well enough that I'm alright with it.

What I felt during this episode was just how obviously this show is written by committee. I know, almost every anime is written by committee, but it felt more obvious here than usual. Obvious (albeit low-key) fan service, the introduction of the love triangle, the color-coded mechs, the notion that the youth are the only sensible people around, the obvious Macross call-back at the end, even the bit where the techie otaku winds up saving the day. It really does feel like they wanted to make sure there is something in there for all the potential fans (though the show does seem to have a lower than average bishounen quotient for a mecha show). Not saying the show is bad, it just felt like this episode was a little more pandering than I would like. The story's pretty good by itself, I don't think it needs all that to sell Blu-Rays, but maybe it does. I don't know.

Or 2: to copy or imitate blatantly or unscrupulously. I think you know what he meant by it anyway.

I think the end result is being pretty hilarious, so I'm not personally complaining. But making up a family tree for a new anime who -clearly- has strong genetic ties to its predecessors can be a lot of fun too.

Etc. (That's from the first episode; I'd replace Evangelion with something else at this point).
