I am not entirely sure on this - we'll have to wait for the next episode to see if it really was him as pilot, or the Mecha responding to his desires.

Things to note:

No berserkergang - he didn't fixate on a particular mech and keep tearing it to shreds, which you'd think he'd do after seeing his love interest apparently obliterated before his eyes.

Why would you need to 'resign as a human' in order to pilot a mecha? What is the true intent of the question?

Why does the boot screen of the mech show a strangely garbed female on the right hand side? Is it simply 'nose art', or an indication of something more?

Based upon the scenes after the credits did the mecha take a sample of his blood, inject him with something truly odd, or both?

Should be interesting to see these and other questions answered.

Finally, what we've all been waiting for! A mecha whose power is proportional to the pilot's sum of Facebook friends.

If a protagonist can't read the front panel and whines about stuff it is really hard to like anything about the anime.

I can't emphasize enough how bad the personality profile for the protagonist is.

When Shoko died i felt it could have been a little more emotional than it was apart from that the first episode was ok. Some interesting characters in this series but the main character seems a bit generic. But the bit at the end definitely left it on a good cliff hanger and I will continue watching this series for now

I enjoyed the first episode, but I'll agree with that. That whole part of the show seemed a bit contrived.

Yeah, but you've just gotta embrace the fun for right now, after all it's only the first episode. All those plot hole justifications are what the next episodes are for.

At least some people agree with me, but yea I hope everything will get explained. I just thought it was a bit to far fetched.
And for the people who think I hate it. I NEVER said it sucked!...yet.
I will watch episode 2.

I guess it depends on how you define pilot. Controlling via will or desire rather than skill or training might still be considered piloting.

Anyway, in spite of the contrived motivation for the MCs action, I thought that was an engaging and fun first episode.

I'm getting a feeling that this season I may have to give up on saying that I don't like mecha.

reminds me of a mix of Gundams Seed and 00. I think I'm going to like this series.

It was all pretty contrived, yeah. Oh no my girlfriend is dead! Luckily the ultimate super weapon in the universe magically appeared 50 feet away.

Though really the more irritating thing is how easily 4 teenagers managed to bypass this entire colony's security and get right to said ultimate super weapon. They pretty much painted an air lock with the innards of two people and NO ONE notices and raises any kind of alarm? Does this place not have customs / immigration? Never mind that they walk straight into the mech hanger ( which has no guards and no security system beyond a locked door basically. All of which is inexplicably beneath a high school swimming pool ).

That's pretty mind numbingly stupid. You built the ultimate super weapon and can't even hire a couple rent a cops?

On the upside, the mech design is kinda bad ass, There are so little mech anime these days with really bad ass mech designs. Usually they look generic, ridiculous or just outright silly.

Since this seems to be going all Gundam on us. ( Enemy commander wears half a mask, TAKE A SHOT ) I'm sure she'll return as the Rival Enemy Pilot. -.-

Loved it. The first show to get me so emotionally involved in a while. Can't wait until the 2nd episode.

Thanks for that. Would have missed the epicness if you hadn't mentioned it.

I'm actually liking this so far. Yeah, it's got a couple of cheesy moments here and there, but I'm getting into way more than Majestic Prince. Definitely keeping this show on queue.
