Not a big fan of Paris to be honest. I have been there a couple of times and was not really impressed, not the friendliest of cities. I enjoyed the rest of France far more than enjoyed Paris. I like Munich and Vienna far more than i liked Paris. To be fair though i speak German, not French, so im sure that was a factor. The only reason i am stopping by there again in August on my way to Italy is because I am traveling with someone who has never been there, so we'll spend a couple nights there at most. Otherwise i would have skipped it all together.

The people are generally very arrogant, unhelpful, greedy and unfriendly.
I've been to parts of Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain and other European cities or villages where people didn't or couldn't speak English, but only in Paris the people don't even try to help you if you don't speak their language. (Outside the larger cities in France people are generally a lot more friendly and helpful.)

There is a huge amount of poverty all around, almost every time I went there, wether it was in the 1990's or last year that has always been one of the constant factors.
I've seen complete families, homeless, roaming the streets with nothing done to help these people and no, that wasn't just me taking a turn into the wrong neighbourhood.
There's large concentrations around more touristy areas, because at least the tourists are willing to give a Euro or 2.

Aside from that, a large portion of the city has a very penetrant smell of urine. Yes, piss.
No matter where I come up, the smell is there.

As for the food and sights, as others have said a lot of that stuff is overrated.

Am I saying do not go to Paris?
No, you should visit it once or twice to form your own opinion. But having been there several times myself, you could say I'm pretty close to hating the city.

This has pretty much been my experience as well. Every time i have visited. Both times I stayed in a family member's house in Fontainebleau, a small town outside of Paris, and people there where very friendly. Paris though was very dirty, unfriendly and disorganized. What i remember the most about my two trips is arriving at Gare De Lyon, where most of the international train arrivals happen in Paris, going to the information booth, asking for help in Spanish, German, Italian and English and receiving no help what so ever. I dont expect the average person on the street to speak another language, that would be rather unreasonable, but i do think a help booth on an international train station should be able of helping a traveler with at least one of the languages spoken by their neighbors.
