I basically tell myself I'm not going to enjoy a show within the first episode and continue to watch it until the end. The whole time I'm watching I'll tell myself I should just drop it but never do. That's why I never want to watch something like Naruto or Bleach because if I end up not liking them, I'll still have to watch the whole thing.

The ending song. If the show itself is bad, I might continue if the ending is good. If not, that's when I know.

I actually watched Birdy the Mighty: Decode longer than I would have because of it's OP. Music can definitely make an otherwise mediocre show shine, IMO.

...Guilty Crown
I endured because of Supercell and Hiroyuki Sawano's music

Anime to me is like that Eminem song.

You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow...

So it better blow me... away.

Sorry for the talking out of topic but, I find it funny that you said that and you have a gif of a girl firing a gun haha

Coincidence or conspiracy

Technically she's firing an arcade coin though.

2 episodes. but only 1 if it has harems or magical girls and 3 if it's political/economic since those can take a bit more time to get off the ground.

though I nearly skipped Baccano because of this. 2 episodes didn't show enough of the plot to decide anything I went back to it after reading comments about how good it was.

I try extra hard not to quit during the first episode, if it on the fence I give it a 2nd else drop it. I hate when I get far and stop liking it, that is the worse cause I can't decide to watch it or drop it. I thought oreshura was good episode 1-2 but... well I didn't like the mid/late, it felt like it went no where. by the time I felt that way I was already 4-6 episode in...

I don't start making a judgement until I've seen at least 5 episodes, that way the anime has had some time to 'properly' get into the main plot and develop the characters.
The OP can also be a good hint.

It irks me when people drop an anime after a single episode. While the first episode can give you a good idea of what a show will be like, you need to give it a proper chance to get the ball rolling.

But a show can still go uphill or downhill along the way. I mean, look at SAO. Most people agree that it started out as a universally liked action anime, but then it turned into a love it or hate it romance.
(And please, let's not turn this into an SAO debate thread. We have enough of those already.)

However, I have a policy that I never drop things, and unless the show is atrociously unbearable and painful to watch, I stick to that policy.

I don't have rules. I just suddenly find I don't feel like clicking on a particular title even when I'm looking for 20 minutes to burn.

Most shows get a couple of eps. many don't get even a first look if I find I'm just not interested in the screenshots descriptions.
That said I watch of number of shows right to the end and even twice or thrice. The ones that do that are ones that with their entire gestalt grab me HARD, early.

One factor early on is a good op/ed. I know I'm hooked if I'm not skipping the op/ed even by the end of the series.
another factor is personal involvment with the characters. If I'm engaged then I'm really rooting for the heroes or their friends. If I detached I'll probably stop watching.

Certain kinds of repitition tend to bore me. I find myself easily turned off by sadistic controlling Tsundere's hint of that in Oreshima led me to quit before I finished episode one. and Oreimo got stale for me pretty quickly. Maiyou sounded promising but it just.. couldn't keep my interest.

on the other Hand Nyarko-san makes me laugh and want more more more. I've watched Rail Gun multiple times, and Ergo Proxy ... SAO didn't even get a first look (I'm TIRED of fantasy)

I usually watch 2-3 episodes before I decide if it is worth watching.

Usually, when I start something, I'll see it through to the end. It would bother me more, not knowing whether the series got better after a few episodes and not knowing how a story ends just drives me nuts. If I'm still convinced that it sucked after watching the entire show, that's fine. But at least I'm "qualified" to say so.

The only exception for me was "Aoi Sekai no Chushin de". It was so horrid, I couldn't even finish the first episode.

I feel sorry for the people that didn't finish the first ep of Tower of Druaga and judged the whole show by it. The first ep is a troll fest and is actually funny if you watch it with that mindset. The show picks up nicely from there.

My standing rule is one DVD (or VHS tape; shows how old I am) worth of episodes, meaning four or five.

I usually give it to about episode 4 or 5 before I decide if I'm going to continue watching.
