Depends, if its an ecchi/fanservice anime in vague disguise about 10 mins. If its just generally not that great I give it about 4 episodes before finally condemning it

I usually give every show three full episodes before I drop it ... Unless it's just so horrible by the end of EP 1 that I want to kill myself. That hasn't happen often though. Most shows are tolerable for at least 23 minutes.

I agree, 3 episodes is the normal amount for me. It's rare that I want to drop an anime after 1 episode, or even partway through the first episode, but it does happen. What normally usually happens is that I stop watching, put it off until later, then don't end up watching it anyways (even though I planned to) because I end up watching something else (including non-anime) or playing games.

Sometimes I end up watching the series I drop, but it's rare-ish. So far, I have no regrets. There's just too much content out there anyway. Even just regular TV watchers (including reviewers) are writing columns complaining that they can't keep up with all the good stuff out there. And that's just normal TV shows, not including stuff like Anime or Drama or movies, or older TV shows on Hulu, American Cartoons, etc. on top of all that.

Not to mention games. Which come in PC, Console, Handheld... and all sorts of flavors, including near endless amounts of mods if you play on PC. I just wing it and play it by ear when it comes to entertainment. I just don't have time to watch/play everything, and I accept that. I wanted to try everything when I was younger, buy now I just watch/play stuff based on instinct / convenience and feel satisfied with that if what I watch / play is good enough to entertain me.

I feel sorry for the people that didn't finish the first ep of Tower of Druaga and judged the whole show by it. The first ep is a troll fest and is actually funny if you watch it with that mindset. The show picks up nicely from there.

Yeah, I almost dropped Tower of Druaga because of episode 1, but I'm glad I didn't. Still, the 1st episode seemed like it was tongue in cheek to me, so I decided to watch episode 2 (after sticking through episode 1) and then enjoyed the rest of the 1st season. I still need to start the second. I'm watching it on Funimation as opposed to here because Funimation translates the openings/endings.

I try to watch at least one full episode unless it is cringe worthy. Shows that are kinda meh... but not to bad I try at least 3 - 5 episodes. The rest I watch until the bitter end. Unless it goes on and on with filler and loses its epic feel like Bleach did. Was awesome till the bount arc and I tried my best to hold in there but eventually it wasn't worth it anymore. I may try again some day.

One episode, but I will occasionally drop a show within ten minutes. Even when I revisit anime that I dropped and watch more episodes, I can't recall ever coming to like any of them.

I give most everything a 3-episode trial, but...

1. If it's pretty clear in episode 1 that I really won't like the show, then watching episode 2 and 3 is just a technicality. While I'm watching them it will be with minimal attention--I'll be web browsing or reading email, or writing in forums at the same time. So at that point they really have to shine to get my attention back and not get dropped.

2. It doesn't have to be great for me to continue beyond episode 3. I'll keep watching even lukewarm stuff if I have the time and am not watching a lot of other stuff. That happened with the Winter simulcasts.

3. I will drop things completely or put them on the "back burner" if they fail to keep my interest adequately at any point after 3 episodes, but with shorter series (12 or 13 episodes), once I've bothered to watch 4 or 5 episodes I figure I might as well finish, so generally I will.

4. If I drop something, or am unsure about continuing something, but hear enough claims that suggest it really is worth watching, I'll probably pick it back up or keep watching.

5. I occasionally break the rule. Teekyu was a 2-minute short. I did't even finish watching the first episode.

#2 and #3 are how I managed to watch all of Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East, which in hidsight I would have been happy to not have watched at all. But #2 is also the reason I stuck with Steins;Gate, which I'm very, very glad I did see. For the first seven episodes I considered it fairly good; watchable but no big deal. It was only at episode 8 that things happened (and continued to happen through to the end) that were exactly what I love, and resulted in an overall rating of "Excellent" for this show.

Considering that anime creators want to give you an accurate idea of the show right away (so you'll come back for episode 2) if it's a no-go by the end of episode 1, I'm not going to make myself watch anymore.

Usually I can get a good sense of the direction it's going by the 10 minute mark. If it's obviously not for me, I'll drop it there. Otherwise, I'll go to the end of the episode, since they often stick an interesting twist at the end if they haven't earlier. But if there's nothing more interesting by then, I won't bother with another episode.

The only time this didn't work for me, and I dropped the series after ep 1, was SAO

Some shows I discard after watching the PV. If they make it past that then I'll usually give them 2 episodes to impress me. ~

first off, I only watch something if the concept piques my interest. next, it depends on just how bad it is. sometimes I'll turn it off within 10-15 minutes of the first ep if I can't tolerate it. I try to at least watch 1 ep to see if it's something I can watch. if it's bearable, I'll give it a few more before I drop it, if things don't pick up.

I give them atleast one episode.

And then, I think about it.

Unless it completely annoyed me in episode 1, I will watch the episode 2.

By episode 2, I will already figure out if I want to watch it or drop it.

I'll usually watch the first two or three episodes. Usually, I'll have some idea about what I want to watch ahead of time.

Oh my yes! I watched all of that episode and continued to the next only because a trusted friend had specifically recommended it. If I'd just started watching it at random, I'm not sure how far I would have made it (I do have a 3-episode rule that I mostly follow, but I'm not sure it would have survived that bit of oddness if I didn't have some sense that it wasn't quite what it seemed.)

I try and watch 2 episodes before I say I don't like something.
