So I had a random thought while watching Devil Survivor 2 the other day.

First, I'm going to apologize ahead of time. I'm tired and not exactly thinking as clearly or as coherently as I would like to.

As we all know most anime characters are in their teens, with characters rarely aging past their 20's. In these shows the characters are typically tasked with saving the world/government/society/etc (excluding strictly slice of life and romance themed shows) and I can't help but think this may be Japan expressing the hopes and dreams they have for the younger generation?

With Japan facing economic failure, a struggling government (with a different prime minister for every year for the last 7 years) and falling birth rates the older generation looks more and more to the young'uns to save the day. I can't help but feel that they are either subconsciously or consciously saying: "Look kids! Ichigo is in highschool and is saving the world!" or "Hibiki is just a kid but he recognizes his responsibility to protect his city and country."

It's really like they're grooming their kids to be the country's saviors via cartoons and comics.

OR MAYBE I'M JUST REALLY TIRED HUHEHEHUEHUEHUEHEUEHEH

Or just maybe the older generation wishes to be young an idealistic, and likes these animes!

Generally based on people I know I think it's largely nostalgia. I think it's rare for 30+ people (talking Japanese specifically) to enjoy shows on the same level as the shows they grew up with.

For example, Dragon Ball > Naruto.

All marketing, folks. Teenagers are the target demographic for many of these shows, so you get main characters who are teenagers.

Is it really so simple though? I feel like if it was JUST marketing the plots would be a lot more simple becoming a little more dominated by shows like GTO and more drama-themed scenarios.

I could be wrong, of course.

......I think you're overthinking.

But if what you're saying is true, they're also grooming their kids to be lolicons and various other types of perverts.

No one's really here for a 50 year old slaying monsters
nor a 30 year old single woman who wants to find love.

Or Japan just realized that they can't rely on old people but can't do anything.

I never really liked the idea of all these teens saving the world in anime. It gets absurd when an action packed anime relies on middle schoolers. I think the industry is just trying to pick up all the young kids who like watching their age group own everyone.

I would much rather like a 25 year old character kicking ass because it's far more realistic and it makes damn sense.

Dark Schnieder or Darsha is over 600

Berserk Guts, is around 30 or older 20s

that target demographic yo

and to me, I think Devil Survivor 2 implies more that Hibiki is doing it for his friends rather than for the sake of the world
