It's possible the MBS wanted Funimation for the home media rights and both Funimation and CR for the simulcast rights. In any case, I wonder if they're going to catch up with the Japanese broadcast or stream it a week late?

Holy molly!! I can't believe this. Funi and Crunchyroll both simulcast this. I was considered subscribing for Funi only for AoT.

So will the episode that has already been aired be available right away? or will we have to wait?

Torrents will come out faster and with better quality now that CR got it. I will be able to watch in 1080p in my computer. Thx CR, you didnt get it on my region but I still love you for helping the pirates!

I believe you can't expect much from CR at this point. I assume it'll be pretty hard to get the rights to publish any show outside NA/UK at this point. Chances for us to be getting catalog titles are almost down to 0% as well.

I never thought I'd see the day where Crunchy AND Funi streamed the same show.

I did happen before with Sora no Otoshimono: Forte, but in that case, Funimation announced it as a simulcast after CR, and started their stream later. The potentially big deal here is that exactly the reverse happened, which would appear to indicate CR obtained the license after Funimation already had theirs.

I can imagine the exchange going something like this:

FUNIMATION: Okay, so we're agreed on the terms for the home video license. So we will also be wanting exclusive streaming rights for the show.

KODANSHA: You can license the streaming rights, but no exclusive.

FUNIMATION: Well, we may have to pass on the home video rights in that case.

KODANSHA: Really?

FUNIMATION: (Shuffles feet, looks down). No, not really.

KODANSHA: I thought so.

I rarely use the CR player since I have the Xbox app.
I find it strange how the Xbox app somehow plays a lot smoother and never has the problem of the picture breaking up like the site does, yet it still manages 720p with no difficulty.

I know right! I've always wondered how the Xbox app player app played so smoothly even in HD while the one on the site is less than perfect, for me at least.

I wish you guys would pop into the XBOX 360 thread in the Help/Support/Feedback section and remind the people there that just because they have problems with streaming on their XBOX doesn't mean everyone does.

Certainly. Discussion about who would get what revolving around Crunchyroll not getting something in parallel with or after Funimation got it was always based on the pattern of behavior. It was never based on any commercial logic driving Funimation to act that way.

We don't know for sure, but I think we can guess what happened. With the rising revenues from streaming at Crunchyroll, the amount it takes to get an exclusive license in competition with Crunchyroll has probably risen, and finally reached the point where in a lot of cases, it makes more sense to just go for the cheaper streaming license by only asking for shared streaming rights.

hickey1992 wrote: It wont actually be 1080p though, not even the 1080p on CR is really 1080p.
Since no anime in japan is broadcast in 1080p, so it is likely just upscaled from 720p or 1080i.

You're going to be confusing people there.

Certainly converting from interlace to progressive is not upscaling, its deinterlacing.

If Crunchyroll gets the material on broadcast tapes, their source material would be 4:3 anamorphic rather than 16:9, so deinterlacing it and converting it from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080 could technically be referred to as an upscale, but its the same anamorphic conversion used to display DVD anamorphic as 16:9 ratio 480p, and most people don't talk about that as an upscale.

For most conversation, an upscale is an increase in the pixel count on both dimensions, not an anamorphic transform from rectangular to square pixels.

Sometimes they don't give Crunchyroll the broadcast tapes, and if they give digital files, it could be in any resolution from 480p on up, but Crunchyroll said when they announced 1080p streaming that they would only do 1080p streaming if they had the source materials to support it. So going on that, if they were given 720p source material, they wouldn't stream it at 1080p.

From a budget standpoint, the quality of 1080p on Crunchyroll largely depends on how well the licenser/publisher upscales the video. For example shows with higher budgets like Fate/zero and Another look great when their unscaled to 1080p while lower budget shows like Dusk Maiden, Ano Natsu de Matteru and even Bleach look the same or sometimes even worse in 1080p.
