Uhmm!

Octane ratings matter especially if you have a high performance engine where usually they use a higher compression, requiring higher octane. Failure to use a higher octane can cause detonation which means (i think) that when compressed, the gasoline will explode early, causing a pinging.

Usually regular passenger cars like Camrys dont need higher octane. But cars like the 69 Camaro with a V8 were manufactored back in the days where high compression (11:1) was the norm and there were actually Super Plus Plus (really high octane) pump gas. Nowadays the highest you can get at the pump is 91, which wont cut it for muscle cars.

Also Plus or "V-Power" just has a little more detergents in it than regular gas + a higher octane rating.

The reason E85 gets eaten up quicker is because it has a lower energy yield than gasoline. And its 15% gasoline because i dont think regular cars can burn just pure ethanol or maybe its mandated by law that it be 15%?

Engine rust?

And yeah there are 100+ Octane for those crazy dragsters and other race cars again because of high compression.

Actually..93 is the norm for most of the US and I know of a few stations that have 100. The reasons octane ratings were a bit higher in the past was because fuels back then contained lead.

Well all i know is California has 87 89 and 91. And yep lead was a cheap way to boost octane levels. It also helped lubricate the valve seats on older cars.

don't go cheap guyz, go with 94! ur just wasting money on 87. is not good for u engine, n it take more gas to run ur car. so just go with 94!!! is only like wat, 5bucks more for a full tank?!

ma 240 needs to use 93 but the only place they sell it is at a shop, and its about 10 for gallon, so i stick with 91, and it sucks cause i can tell the difference between them.

Its not a matter of going cheap...if your car is engineered to run at 87 octane, it will not benefit you any to use higher. How is it not good for your engine when its designed to run on it?

damn cars must be the worst type of investment ever, they just keep on sucking out your money. but anyways couldnt it damage your car if you use a octane level too low or something?

Using octane thats too low will induce engine knock, and engine knock will damage your engine.
Using too high of octane, will serve no purpose as far as power output, fuel economy or increased engine life.
