I've noticed recently (or at least with the anime I watch) there's quite a bit of chatter in the comments below the film that tends to give away the story. While personally, I don't mind (since I usually, but not always, watch the video before reading the comments), other people might find it a discourtesy. I DO consider it a discourtesy when people reveal what is COMING up in future episodes.

I realize it can be tricky to determine what is technically a "spoiler" and what isn't, but some things are pretty obvious, and it's those I'm calling particular attention towards.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Yeah, I think they need to move that spoiler button closer to the "Add Comment" button too and make it much, much larger so it attracts people's attention. Or what they can do is have 3 spoiler boxes next to the "Add Comment" button. The first spoiler box button would be for Spoiler things that happened within that particular ep. The 2nd spoiler box button could be for Spoilers from future eps. And the 3rd spoiler button could be for Manga Spoilers.

Or something should be implemented that when they click on "Add Comment", another message box or something will appear and simply ask, "Is this a spoiler?"

Anyway, I do really think something else needs to be tried - I'll suggest this in the "suggestions" thread here I guess.

I think an extra dialogue box for "is this a spoiler" might annoy some people alittle. Might be worth it, idk. But I do like the idea of a bigger button.

Actually, what I'd like in particular is spoiler tags like we have on the forum, and that way people can add stuff like:
"That was freaking awesome!"

And that way people can specify exactly what is the spoiler while still being able to tell the world how they feel about the show or add constructive commentary like:
"Warning on the next episode:"

This might be alittle more effort on the part of the user than what we have now, (and alittle harder on the poor guy who programs it), but I'd certainly appreciate it.

Yeah, I like that idea too!

Also, I think it needs to be more defined what a Spoiler actually is in regards to video comments, since I'm not sure people really know. That's why I think there should be a link next to the "Add Comment" button that says "What is a spoiler? Please click if unsure." And if a person isn't sure, they can click on it so that they know it's basically anything pertinent that happens in a future ep, the manga, the videogame or something important that happens within that particular ep that they just watched. <-- At least, that might be my definition of it in regards to video comments, I'm sure other people may or may not agree. I think if we were to implement like what u suggested above, (or the 3 check boxes that I suggested in my prior post), I think that would eliminate a lot of spoiler problems.

Edit:

If u don't mind OP, I'll go ahead and post your suggestions as well as some of mine (along w/anyone else's that I see here) in the "suggestions" thread in the Help/Feedback forum. Don't know if anything will be done, but it's worth a shot.

For the current episodes, I usually check the box if it absolutely spoils the episode. For information I usually find, Like for example: If I find information on Oreimo. that's for the next episode, I didn't think it was a spoiler if they were posted on the official site where everyone can read it, but however. I think I'll try to keep that in mind next time I post.

HoshinoKaabi, if I was one of the people you're talking about, I'm sorry for that.

I like that idea too! :D

Go right ahead and post those!

I think having multiple levels of spoiler comments may be unnecessary complication, I like the idea of a dialogue box to ask if the comment is a spoiler, but this would get annoying really fast if you were not in the habit of posting spoiler comments, plus it would be easy to get in the habit of hitting enter after every comment post without considering what the dialogue says.
A better solution would be to use the Google Prediction API to parse a comment as it is submitted (only those not declared as spoilers) to detect if it could be a spoiler, then either submit it as a spoiler automatically or ask the user for confirmation.

I don't know if you are one of those who don't want the episode spoiled, don't scroll down. Don't blame others when there is a simple solution that the person can do themselves to make sure it isn't spoiled. I don't believe people don't use the spoiler button to be jerks and ruin it for others its more of a I got caught up in the moment and aren't thinking kind of thing.

It's not just the current ep though, the problem is some people post things that happen in future episodes, and not just the current ep. But also, like a show like Amnesia, I've seen spoilers from the Visual Novel being posted @_@ Personally, I think video comments should pertain only to the current ep that they just watched, and that the spoiler tag should only be used for specific things about that current ep. IMO, any other spoiler info from the manga, video games (visual novels) or from future eps should be eliminated and not be posted in the 1st place under the video comments. I mean, I've seen it where people will post things from a future ep, and while they did use a spoiler tag, I think people can still be tricked into clicking it and reading it since I think most people assume it's a spoiler from that particular ep that they just watched (it's happened to me before). That's why I kinda like the OP's idea or the idea of a 3 check box system that I suggested in a prior post so that the kind of spoiler too is easily identified (whether it's from the manga, a future ep, etc. or a combination of some sort) without actually having to click on the spoiler post and reading it (because by that time, it may be too late ).

Maybe they should have spoiler tag automatically on, and rather have you uncheck it, if its not a spoiler

Yeah seriously, the other day someone spoiled something having to do with the next arc in Hunter x Hunter, a BIG spoiler too. At the end of his spoiler he put SPOILER WARNING HAHA. I reported him but I doubt anything happened. I don't think people realize how wrong it is to ruin something someone enjoys.

@ erialolita - Surely you are not so narrow-minded as to think its more fair to tell someone not to scroll down than it is to click a button that says Spoiler. Also some people post very small comments, 2 - 3 words = a major spoiler, there is no warning or time to stop if it is so short. Also the comments section is, well, the comments section. After I complete the newest episode of anime I love to scroll down, comment, and see what others thought of the episode. Should I not scroll down ever? Thats what your telling me to do.

Well, actually I've reported some spoiler comments in the past, and generally, they are usually removed from what I can tell.

The way I see it, there's 3 issues here that need addressing:

1) What constitutes a spoiler in regards to video comments.

2) Sometimes people forget to click the spoiler tag button, so how do we address this problem in case they do forget, or what can be done so that it's harder to forget to click on the spoiler tag button?

3) Some kind of labeling should be done identifying what kind of spoiler a video comment is (like a future ep spoiler, manga spoiler, video game (visual novel) spoiler, or a current ep spoiler).

I rewatch series a zillion times and read the manga and novels first much of the time so spoilers don't bother me but...

As suikojay mentions another problem is that the spoiler tag is used non-spoiler purposes so people are used to opening spoilers... then they get a real spoiler and they're sad that they clicked it. Would be nice if there was a "previous text hidden to conserve space" tag and a "picture hidden to save space" tag, a "this week's episode spoiler" tag, a "manga/novel spoiler" tag, etc. but for now all we can do is precede spoiler tags with text like "MAJOR MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD DON'T READ UNLESS YOU REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT TO KNOW".

Regarding watching videos... My advice is not to read the comments at all unless you want to be spoiled. It will happen so... just like when climbing a ladder, DON'T LOOK DOWN!!! Seriously... Or for best results watch videos the minute they come out, before anyone can add comments LOL

Also, avoid reading the discussion forums until you have watched this week's episode. AND, know which shows are actually latecasts which other people have seen on other sites. They will be discussing this week's episode before it comes out here unfortunately. It gets complicated but often it is simplest to only read the threads the day you watch this week's episode, stop reading after that which is no fun but is the only way to avoid being spoiled.

I have whined about this already but MAL has a nice feature of having a separate thread for each episode of anime. This helps, but does not entirely prevent, people spoiling about the manga or future episodes but it is better than having one thread for a whole anime series or several seasons. Looks like Crunchyroll does NOT want to go down this route which is kind of too bad. Read the discussion forums at your own risk or just enjoy the spoilers.
