I'd be asleep or drunk or having a hangover. Or might not be doing nothing.

Your not alone there I do that all that time. I like to sometime be a character but I mostley like to pretend I'm my own character in the Anime, Manga, etc. I do that to movies to, I think because me and my dad always done it so I never found it wierd or anything, still dont and proud. //_^Y

I tend to do this while playing video games; not so much while indulging in other sorts of storytelling mediums.

It's a lot easier in video games. A lot of characters are designed with a lack of outstanding personality traits so that the player may have a far more seamless time placing himself in the shoes or aforementioned character.

It's most difficult to assume the role of the main character in many books/movies/etc because generally speaking, characters in those mediums are more developed and storytelling is far higher up in terms of importance.

Of course, I'm not saying the video games are without engaging stories or characters. That is very far from true.

This,to me,is how I daily daydream lol.But I'm a little different. Since I wanna make comics myself. I create characters that I intitially model somewhat off of myself. Even to the very least. This personality heritage when creating a character is only used to create a main character.

So I kinda do this as a habit of mine.Never thought of imagining being an anime character or whatever. But I have a slew of characters I think resemble me to the almost to the bone if it weren't for being fictional and ethnicity were ruled out..

Sure. Motsly I imagine myself as a protagonist of the story and I put myself in his skin.

I put myself in everyone's skin. The good guy, the bad guy, that chocolate bar. But it's maybe because I'm a self proclaimed highly empathetic guy. I have my own leanings and I try to think from it more than sucking up everything I'm exposed to.

There are few shows out there where someone hasn't imagined themselves in place of the main character thinking "if I were in his/her shoes, I would have done that differently."

No... I don't. I am my own character and I enjoy myself immensely. I just so happen to enjoy watching the stories of other characters as well. Take what you're given. Don't go wishing for what someone else has. That's pretty much the same as self pity. Besides, most of you have to admit you would be hopeless in the shoes of your favorite character. Whether it was a harem anime or an action novel. And if you WERE that character. Then you wouldn't be you anymore.. now would you?

Now if you wanna talk about projecting myself into the setting as a completely new character... then hell yeah!

That's fine. You can't read a novel without sensing some of the author in the characters. They use personal emotions/thoughts they've experienced themselves and write them into the characters. Some authors are better at hiding it than others. And some are annoyingly bad at giving you the feeling the main character IS the author. And it carries between stories.. which can be very very bad. So.. don't end up like the latter.

I don't really do that with anime or manga, I tend to just make fanfic with a new character. I can to a degree with books, but I generally tend to making my own characters and inhabiting them.
