You only care for things you have an interest in. Seems to be coded somewhere in the human genom.
So... imagine yourself as a character in an anime would mean to care about the story (aka like it) or you are just a jackass ruining everyting you see and its not yours.

If you see more in anime than just contemporary entertainment to kill time.. you might imagine yourself in the story. Otherwise: Not.

All the time. A participant in the Holy Grail War, in the Mirai Nikki war, a heir to the Vongola lineage. Its hella fun! ^__^
I love to revisit the world of Fate. I just love that series so much.

Not really, I don't tend to mix reality with anime/manga and I certainly wouldn't want to be a High School of the Dead character as I hate all the characters and think the show is pathetic and full of fan service, and I'd probably go out of my way to get them all killed. Sure it would be cool if Dragonball or Pokemon existed, but it doesn't, so that's that.

Around 10 years ago I used to watch back to back martial arts and action films and spend most of my quiet time imagining choreographed action scenes, but never really did much with it. Had a friend who was a movie director who used to make cheap action films, kind of regret not getting involved.

I don't technically imagine myself as a character from a movie or anime
but I do tend to think of myself as a character in one of those movie or anime.

Yes, and it's always in a reverse harem.

Yes and I often wonder how the characters would react toward me if I existed there.

You're not alone. It helps them forget about things for awhile. That's why they watch things like Anime to begin with.

It happens all the time with me, especially if I am reading my favorite book or manga.

I prefer to invent characters that are free to visit whatever worlds I feel like inserting them into, because I tend to get bored with a single "world" pretty quickly. I like short scenarios.

My favorite "worlds" are:

Xiaolin Showdown
Kuroshitsuji
Noblesse
Dragon Ball Z
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Gundam Seed
Inuyasha
Fate/Zero
Yu Gi Oh!
Bleach
Naruto/Naruto Shippuden
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess/The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

I usually Imagine interacting with the Zelda "worlds" as I'm playing the games, since it helps to keep things from becoming tiresome.
