I apologize if a similar topic has already been made, so just lock this if necessary.

What do you think of war? Do you think it is necessary? Or whatever other thoughts you may have.

I think war is a pointless excuse to send a whole bunch of people to die as political puppets. I really hate it, it gets to me when I see the army recruitment trying to convince people to fight to "Protect the nation" when all you're doing is acting as someones tool.

War is only necessary if there is a need for it. If the need turns into a want then it is just a tool for profit.

The irony of it.

It brings out the best and the worst in people. No matter how much we long for peace, truth be told, we wouldn't be living so peacefully today if it weren't for the wars of yesterday that spawned technologies and institutions that help us avoid conflict.

It's all bullshit, some occasions it's a necessity and others it's a waste of time. I can't think about it too much or I'll have a stroke.

It depends on the reason for the war. Sometimes it's necessary - the Second World War was necessary to bring down the Nazis, and in the aftermath things like human rights appear on the agenda.

Oher times, it's purely for political reasons (Iraq for example), which is just wrong.

You can say that again

Only time it's needed is when what it's stopping is worse than the death and destruction it causes.

i.e, Holocaust.

I would say war is unnecessary from a certain point of view, yet at the same time it is also inevitable. War is an extension of competition and conflict, which is also in part generated by free will and survival. As long as people have the ability to choose, there will always be competition and conflict. As long as those two elements exist, war will be only a matter of time. Reasons for war change, priorities change, as well as wanted resources changing. Violent conflict is present in every trophic level in nature, it is a constant for every living organism within their own species, there is no reason to think humans are different. In the end nature will always win over nurture at the population level.

M*A*S*H summed it up pretty nicely.

Hawkeye: War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
Father Mulcahy: How do you figure, Hawkeye?
Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe.
Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

Although, I think it a necessity. Some can say it is unneeded, but their morality is subjective just as the next.

^This. I also think sometimes it is used to bolster the economy (and take resources), done out of boredom, done to distract the masses of what is going on domestically, done to justify a wrong action, done out of paranoia, and done for the fear and hatred of alternate ideologies.
