I would say that I love Toradora a tiny fraction more, but it is close.

Angel Beats made me cry more though.

You need to go watch it. It can give Clannad (and After Story) a run for it's money in the Romance-Drama department.

Oh yeah, and you can see it completely for free (on Hulu) or here (if you have a guest pass).

just wondering how many that have posted here have seen 10 animes past say 2006? 2004?

not including naruto one piece bleach or gintama

it seems that toradora is on everyones favorite list while school days not so much

since this is a comparative thread might as well throw this out

Because as a slice of life romance story School Days succeeded for the most part in scaring the crap out of everybody.

In terms of anime I found what it did to be quite original, I mean it is not often you see a harem protagonist having a pair and using the fact he has a harem to his complete advantage instead of being A. a little bitch about it or B. Be completely oblivious to how awesome his current situation is.

I cannot say it worked out well in the end for Makoto though.

Hmmm...that one is really a difficult question, the two really aren't similar in very many ways. Personally I'd go with Toradora, but it's more of a drama than Angel Beats which is more of an action comedy. Though I have to be honest they are both really amazing anime. and I do kind of like Angel Beats art style just a little bit more.

What's the connection here? Both shows end with an exclamation mark?

Angel Beats! was a show with tons of characters that tried to weave a meaningful story for them all in a scant 13 episodes. Some of the stories worked, and some of them didn't. It had a great premise and some hard-hitting moments, but its focus wasn't narrow enough in the end.

Toradora! is yet another high school romance. Despite this, it manages to be funny, romantic and dramatic in all the right moments, has a really well developed central cast, and is so incredible at building tension that the climaxes seem to just write themselves. For me, it's no contest - Toradora! is the clear winner, and one of my all-time favourites.

Can't compare the two. Toradora is a romantic comedy turned drama near end. A class J.C. Staff plot ( see Kimikiss or Shuffle! ) so it's really nothing of the sort of mastery that Angel Beats. Angel Beats is planned & executed like many other Key VN's that've been animated. It starts out comedic/cutesy, but slowly the realism & drama kicks in leaving you with tears and wanting more. Thus their never ending success.

It's really like comparing apples to oranges with this one.

I don't understand this. So you're saying that the structure of Toradora! and Angel Beats! is similar, and argue that they're both comparable to other J.C. Staff shows or Key VNs, then use this same characteristic as a negative for Toradora! and a positive for Angel Beats!. And then you say they're too different to compare.
