Sword Art Online. .Hack//Sign isn't even as popular as Sword Art Online.

.Hack//Sign

Everything about it is superior, especially because it doesn't turn into a half assed romance that continues to be half assed by trying to be a harem.

.hack//sign for sure. With the gate hacking and interfering with Morganna causing problems and facing the repercussions. The creation of Azure Flame God, , it's just so much epicness in the series.

I think a lot of what .hack tried to do storywise, SAO simply did better. I think .hack tried to put too much effort into character development as a means to carry the story when there wasn't all that much story to tell. SAO added a few caveats and executed a greater degree of action, suspense and romance that was simply not possible with .hack (probably because the genre was so new at the time the anime was made).

I'm sorry if I come off a little brusque here but I find this trend of people typing words with little added content very disturbing on the internet, so this might be a bit long, but I wanted to talk about both shows and their comparison since I've watched SAO a few times and .hack//Sign up to episode 8 just today.

Both shows deal with VR MMO's and peoples' relationships and characters when they find most of their social interactions being with others in the (VR) net. I found when I first watched SAO about 3 years ago, I f'ing loved the story and the fact that the pacing, the action and the show especially in Season 1 was very "in your face". It does have elements of harem anime throughout, and has time skips especially early on which if you accept as slightly annoying and continue, won't bother you too too much. I might agree, although this is judgemental from the older viewers' POV, that it relies on it's production values and at some times unlikely "random" one-shots to inject more drama into the series. The way that it's executed, it's not that big a drawback. A lot of people were very pissed off by Alfheim Season 2, but I don't really know why, so permadeath is not on anymore, does that by itself spoil the entire show for you there...I think the Suguha arc while maybe not concluding exactly realistic was terrific. Season 3 had a lot of flash and purists or "oldschoolers" will say they don't like it, but nobody can tell me 1 on 1 watching it by yourself with a straight face that Season 3's GGO arc wasn't very pretty and felt very crisp.

I am trying to get into .hack because I remember watching mmm, Quantum a year or two back and enjoying it a lot, I also tend to love the whole world within a world theme that both have, and it is the precursor (meaning earlier, derivative work) show. Mostly from what I've gotten, flipping in between windows and being mildly pissed today, a lot of the early plot involves Tsukasa feeling lonely and disconnected. Love it or hate like the poster below me states throughout nearly entire episodes there is background music. Japanese movies especially use backdrops like this sort of thing like a plot device, playing with the atmosphere to try to influence the viewer's mood like focusing on a sunset or a close-up of a meal for much longer than most Hollywood-made stuff. My sticking point with .hack right now is there are whole episodes where the cast exchanges banter, but it's not charged and it involves a lot of smaller moving parts, some feeling near inconsequential (although each character's personality is rather distinct)...I suppose this is where being spoiled by production values, action and "forced" plot movement might make a person prefer SAO because it does grab you by the face and shoves you into the spotlight. The quick flip side is very little feels contrived in .hack.

I have to rewatch most of these .hack episodes when I'm less pissed off and tipsy, but I wanted to suggest that a) people ONLY vote after they've watched most or all of both animes - hence why I am not voting b) judge them on several factors besides whether it's nostalgic for you or you just "like it" more, talk about content, character, arcs.....c) more words that have meaning. Saying SUMMER BREAK RULEZ seems like it's a sentence but it's actually garbage, a 3 year old could speak the same sentence and have the same meaning as a dog wagging their tail, the words express an emotion without any real Content besides that.

Sorry if this is a bit long. I'm just hoping this sparks discussion, and actually, I'd like to solicit some thoughts from the fellas and ladies that might have went into the .hack universe, because it has a LOT more episodes and manga...if I end up only feeling "meh" or average+ about .hack//Sign which stories or games should I check out next? I rented and played one of the PS games for 2 days and liked it but for the life of me I don't remember which one.

OK TOO LONG SEEYA, Thanks guys. : )

They were so shit at editing hack//sign that I had to turn it off 15 minutes in. There was clown music when it was supposed to be serious. There was sad music when it was supposed to be exciting. The music was louder than the conversations. And worst of all, the music never ever stopped. There was not 2 seconds without some kind of loud music that didn't fit in with what was going on.

SAO, much more of an interesting cast and overall story arc. Hack came across as too much of a try hard yet still fail in my books.

.hack because I grew up with it. It's also really not confusing at all, not understanding why people think it is.
