~ Portrayal of Race in Manga and Anime
Posted 5/30/13

I think you're able to tell that they're Asian because of their skin colour/hair colour and eye colour, really. If their hair/eyes were naturally brown, you'd think they were something else. But that's what I mean, just because Asians have ultra black hair and ultra dark eyes don't make these features exclusively Asian. Caucasian people obviously have these features as well, but only a minority of them actually have the darkness at the same level as the majority of Asians. I can tell that their Black hair is not ultra black.

Google image Leann Rimes, and you'll see what I mean. Her eye colour is not "asian" but her eyeshape is (I'm just labelling things as Asian for the sake of the argument, I don't believe in defining any race by "asian" or "caucasian" features). And on the streets I see a lot of Caucasian people with these sort of eyes.

_______

Have you looked at Black characters design in Bleach/Naruto/D.Grayman? They don't have flat nose, thick lips that you suggested.

At the same time, there are main characters with slanted eyes and "asian" eyes such as Sasuke from Naruto is a prime example.

Brown hair/brown eyes are NOT an "Asian-only" or rather, "non-white"" only trait.

Even if Leann Rimes had dark colored eyes and dark hair, you'd STILL at once be able to tell she is white because of the FACIAL FEATURES distinctive to the Caucasian race. Like for instance, even if an Asian person wore colored contacts or circle lenses, you can tell at once they are Asian because they have the typical Asian features.

Like I said, race goes FAR beyond coloring. What defines race is facial features, bone structure etc.

Quite a few European Caucasians have jet black hair and eyes. A lot of Irish/Celtic and Brits do, as well as the more Mediterranean-European Caucasian like Italians, or Spaniards. And of course the Middle Eastern/Indian Caucasians mostly have dark hair and eyes, but a lot of them (especially the white skinned ones like Israelis or North Indians) have colored eyes and non-black and lighter hair.

Sasuke's eyes are still drawn large. If they wanted to make a character that actually LOOKS Asian, the eyes would be smaller or sharper. Just like how when they want to emphasize a Black character they make them usually have thick lips or wide noses. Or when they feature an Indian character they make them usually brown skinned. If they can do that, then they should be fair and give the Asian characters typical narrower Asian eyes with the typical Epicanthic fold that the majority of Asians have.

I still disagree, but you are free to believe what you wish.

In my opinion, black hair and ultra dark eyes are common in Asian but not so common in other races. And also, Asians have varying facial bone structure, they don't all have flat faces.

Well, I disagree entirely with you, but still - have a good day. It was an interesting talk.
