When it comes with influencing a mangaka, one of the most influencing factors is the character design. Take for example Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha) (shown below) and how her character designs influenced other character designs.

* (Rumiko Takahashil; Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha)

* (Yoshiyuki Sadamoto; Evangelion, FLCL, .hack, Mamoru Hosoda movies)

* (Rei Hiroe; Black Lagoon) (Yu Aida; Gunslinger Girl)

I'm not sure if there is any direct correlation, but Lucky*Star's Kagami and Tsukasa Hiiragi look alot like 2 certain purple-haired twins with respective personalities from a certain Key anime (Clannad).
Also, Tsukasa seems to remind of a character I once saw in To-Heart.
Again, not sure about the relation, but...

And I have lost track of how many characters look like or resemble Etna from Disgaea in any way (hair, hair style, hair..., face, eyes, character)

What is conversing up there is more of 'works of anime produced by the same studio seem to have resemblences in appearance/art structure'.

And that just ends up being "Gee, I wonder why an anime studio/mangaka has characters that look similar" which is kind of a well, uh duh kind of thing to ask. Of course a mangaka is going to have a particular style of drawing, and it's going to heavily influence character design. Same goes for animation studios. They tend to have a certain style, and it influences their character designs.

you might as well be discussing different peoples hand writing.

This thread is about character look alikes / influencing.

I agree, KyoAni has LOTS of influencing. Some of their characters look like hybrids of two of their other characters, others look like slightly different copies. Others resemble characters from completely different anime; not done by KA. I still love KyoAni as a studio though; but I can't deny that there's a likeness between more than a few of their characters.

CLAMP's characters suffer from Noodle People Proportions, they all have very long, thin, legs and arms. Since some of their characters are related, they bear a resemblance to one another as well.

Pretty much everyone in Dragon Ball would look the same without hair. I don't even like Dragon ball, but all their faces look similar to me.

I wouldn't necessarily say one anime has influence over another when it comes to character design. They're all within the same branch in the overall company (for the most part). Anime itself has distinct artwork that separate it from cartoons. They seem similar because they have that same design and theme across the board.

I'm a big fan of Atsushi Nishigori's (Gurren Lagann, IDOLM@STER) character designs, and how they're not afraid to draw influence from older and western sources.

Sadly I don't have too much to say regarding other character designers or how they were influenced/are influencing others, but here are some pictures:

I could look at his stuff all day. It never looks too weird (other than PSG), but always seems inspired.
This makes me excited for Kill La Kill :3
