Deadline Hollywood has reported that HBO is in talks with Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) to develop a TV series based on the manga Monster.

Del Toro will be co-writing with Stephen Thompson (best known for his writing on Doctor Who and Sherlock.) The project was originally planned for a feature film, but proved too complicated to fit into a normal feature-length time frame. Del Toro was eventually able to convince Naoki Urasawa, the author of Monster, to talk to HBO about a TV series instead.

Finally! Something exciting to look forward to! I just hope they don't screw up by casting the wrong type of people to play the roles. :/

I'm only on episode 9 of the anime, but I think this is one series that would work very well as a live action series.

Well, I'd rather Thompson than Moffat, that's for sure.

this means that I need to actually watch/read Monster before this thing starts its run and become that one annoying friend who spoils all of the things for the show (then again depending on how much they might end up changing, this plan has a few holes in it).

that said, I think that this is a really good thing for the anime industry in the west, as well. If this thing does well (given its celebrity pedigree, it'll at least have a large amount of attention directed towards it). If it succeeds in being created and is popular, then maybe more people will check out the source material and use that as a gateway into anime, which I'm all for.

Anything on HBO is bound to be at least half decent.

The anime and manga are amazing, so I'll have high hopes for this if it gets greenlit.

I know!
I can't imagine anyone to play the role of Johann and be good at it.

Am excited nevertheless.

Yes, I can definitely imagine this being done very well as live action.

Sadly, I don't get (and don't intend to get) HBO. (But maybe it will end up available on Amazon Instant Video. I'm willing to pay to see a good series; I just won't pay my cable company a large monthly fee for access to just one show).

Never finished the series, but the concept seemed interesting to me. I should finish it.
Curious as to how it will change when developed for HBO.

Guillermo del Toro is one of my most favorite directors so I will burden him with very high hopes for greatness. The thought brings tears to my eyes also! I know he did Pacific Rim which is kind of Gundam-ish, but it'd be awesome to have him adapt actual anime/manga. I wonder if he'll manage to cast Ron Perlman somehow since they seem increasingly co-dependent.
